Hooked on You: A Dead by Daylight Dating Sim review: Cute but cowardly

It Daylight is the last day of daylightDating simulator cheekily named Get hooked on youIt is an interesting paradox. This is a project that, for most studios, would exist in the form of an April Fools’ joke or Easter egg. However, Daylight is the last day of daylightBehaviour is aware that Killers has an ardent fan base. To address this demand, the studio has created Killers: A dedicated game for players. The studio is publishing developer Psyop’s Get hooked on you: The Simmingo of Daylight Death.

It’s simple. You awaken on an island with some of the most sexiest Killers. Daylight is the last day of daylightThey want to play beach volleyball, smooch, instead of instantly shanking and hanging you on a hook. Each player decides with which Killer they wish to be friends, goes along to beach activities co-ordinated by Dwight, Claudette and occasionally plays minigames. It’s the logical endgame of the fandom’s horniness, and yet the writing is very earnest and charming.

Hooked On You: A Dead by Daylight Sim - Claudette, along with fellow survivor Dwight, is dressed in cheery island gear. She’s saying “Trapper, without further ado, would you like to make us all uncomfortable by pushing the boundaries of what’s acceptable not only in polite society but within the narrative of this in-world event and also the larger meta-narrative of a Dead by Daylight dating experience?”

The player who is fortunate and makes good choices will get the chance to snuggle up with one of these killer Killers. If they’re unlucky, they get stabbed. This narrative suggests that there is something more beneath, almost like a misery-generating machine disguised in cheery vibes. This is a great premise. The trick is in a humorous concept such as this. Get hooked on youYou must deliver the full product. This is where developer Psyop stumbles, constantly turning to the player to ask “Isn’t this Strange? A whole dating sim… about a horror game? Wild, right?”

This isn’t a bad game by any means; in fact, it’s surprisingly solid. If you’re a Daylight is the last day of daylight lore fan, it’s quite wholesome to chat to these characters about their grisly backstories and morbid motivations. Sometimes, Get hooked on you is hilarious — or genuinely horrifying. There’s a running gag about a nearby island that’s Much more cooler, more exclusive, and — oh yeah — has all of the game’s licensed characters from horror franchises hanging out. Surprise guest, the Trickster appears and discusses his NFT lines. This game then seamlessly flips over to show a spectral lighthouse which pulls souls out from other realities in order to send them on to unforgiving beaches. The Trapper proves that he is only capable of possessive and controlling mimicry love.

It’s a shame, because Get hooked on youAll of its great qualities are present, however the game can feel so scared that you may find the game creepy. Characters won’t stop turning and mugging for the camera. They say “wink, wink” aloud and then say how wild and unexpected it is that they’re saying “wink, wink” instead of just winking. You are criticized by the narration for breaking the fourth Wall too many times, and the storyteller laughs at you two scenes later when he smashes the wall to make a joke about why it is important that you leave good reviews for the game on Steam. When I find a rhythm, the game kicks my feet and asks me why I don’t get this whole concept. understand that? Yeah, Get hooked on you, I do, please let me get back to getting crushed by the Huntress’ thighs.

You can see that Psyop is afraid the player will laugh at him. AtThese are them, and not With them. This narrative tries to preemptively assure you that this joke is being played and does not take this serious. WouldIf this were serious it would make you cringe, however isn’t. It’s all Thank you unnecessary, and I kind of hope Behaviour and Psyop take another swing at the dating sim genre without all the self-conscious narrative clutter — because the good stuff is very good.
