Guardians Of The Galaxy Director James Gunn To Direct DCU’s ‘Superman: Legacy’

James Gunn, an earlier this year (Guardians of the Galaxy PeacemakerPeter Safran and Judith SafranAquaman DC Studios co-CEOs and producer) revealed the DC cinematic universe’s initial chapter. The first chapter, dubbed “Gods and Monsters”, will feature 10 TV and movie projects. The new Superman film “Superman: Legacy” is just one example of the many projects.

At the time of the movie’s announcement, it was rumored that Gunn was going to direct it but that wasn’t confirmed. Safran stated that he hoped Gunn would be the director. Gunn, with an emotional tweet, confirmed yesterday that “Superman: Legacy” will indeed be his directorial debut.

Gunn wrote in a Twitter that “Yes, Superman: Legacy will be released July 11, 2025.” My brother Matt said that he began to weep when he noticed the release date. He didn’t know why. It was Dad’s birthday, I asked. It was something I didn’t realize. Three years ago, I lost my father. He was my best buddy. Although he didn’t know me when I was a child, he understood my passion for comics and film. Without him, this movie would not be possible.

This has been an extremely long journey. I was offered Superman years ago – I initially said no because I didn’t have a way in that felt unique and fun and emotional that gave Superman the dignity he deserved. Then a bit less than a year ago I saw a way in, in many ways centering around Superman’s heritage – both how his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents inform who he is and the choices he makes.

So I decided to write the script. Peter Safran and other people kept pushing me to make the decision to take over as director. It doesn’t matter that I wrote something; it just means I felt it enough emotionally and visually to dedicate over two years to it.

It’s short, but I love the script. I am so excited about this adventure. #UpUpandAway”

“Superman: Legacy,” which is due to be released in theaters July 11, 2025, is described by Safran as “the beginning of the DCU”. According to the co-CEO, this movie is “the start of the DCU.” However, the story will be about Superman’s origin. Safran says it will instead focus on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing, before harkening to a decades-old theme of the hero: “He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way. “He is kindness in an age when kindness is considered old-fashioned.”

It was announced that “Superman: Legacy” is still being developed by JJ Abrams, Te-NehisiCoates, and will be available outside of the DCU. This will mirror the “The Batman”, Matt Reeves movie starring Robert Pattinson will also exist.
