Grid Legends tries to look fast, but gets in its own way

Codemasters’ touring-car Grid franchise has lurched back and forth between simulation and arcade gameplay emphasis practically since the series began in 2008. Next year’s Grid LegendsFor the second consecutive edition, leans on arcade features. This brings back a lot what racing fans might have missed in a rebooted. Grid At the close of 2019, they hustled the woman out the door.

It lurches. Not in how Grid Legends’ vehicles handle, but in the third-person camera trailing them. You can see the back and forth between shifting to the third gear or feathering your brakes with the lightest chicane. This visual effect is meant to give you a sense of speed. Grid Legends It is possible to abuse this effect which can both lower my speed and take away the joy of controlling it. That’s probably not the thing race fans want to read about a title coming in two months. It’s not the thing I wanted to write after six hours with a preview build, either.

Sure, I can neutralize the camera’s exaggerations by taking a cockpit view, but that presents a different degree of difficulty when racing with a gamepad. It still doesn’t change the fact that it’s hard to sustain smooth driving with the camera angle that most arcade racers will use. My Renault and Ferrari both jackrabbit through each gear change and then slam on every brake. The camera effect blurred my ability to determine how slow I needed to go. It was as easy to die in the middle of a turn, as it was to overshoot an oval left corner and smash into a tire wall.

It is particularly frustrating when you consider the fact that this happens so often Grid Legends makes no bones about being a pack racer, sort of like the pavement version of last year’s Dirt 5. If you don’t encourage it, hard contact will be inevitable. It’s the triggering mechanism for the game’s Nemesis system, which returns from Grid 2019. It’s still not very nuanced; smack an AI racer and they get mad. It’s not. Grid Legends, they’ll stay mad for a few races. The Nemesis was never lit up by me running someone off the track. I also dive-bombed corners and made a driver wider, among other racing offenses.

A lot of what happened last year is still relevant. Grid, mostly in terms of race courses and locations — Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Brands Hatch Circuit, and Havana and San Francisco’s multiple street tracks are just a few of the incumbents. One of the most popular attractions is Strada Alpina (in Le Mans-style) which has been the winner in every category.

New vehicle classes like stadium trucks and all-electric racers will add to the excitement. Boost gates (drivers must pass through two in a long corner to claim the perk) are placed well outside the racing line, making it a legitimate gamble to go for the extra horsepower, even if you’re leading. Every driver will be honest about the jumps. Both takeoff and landing are real physics and are rarely executed perfectly. I appreciated the inherent risk the jumps presented, even if the reward for taking one wasn’t apparent.

Multi-classification racesGrid Legends It will include 48 distinct car classes. This sounds like an intriguing spin. However, the novelty of racing various vehicles is somewhat diminished by how Grid Legends I was responsible for setting up the race field. All the cars of the same type were placed together in the races, and the slower class (as in racing semis), got a jump start. My race was an open-wheel, so I was at the rear of the pack. Three laps in a race I saw only one car, with Hard AI being the fastest, so I was never more than 12th. In fairness, I did see a toggle that could multiply the distance between career events.

The field was established two years ago. Grid, players had the option of hot-lap qualifying — a single lap to determine starting order if you weren’t happy with the randomized spot the game gave you. Again, I was in a preview build, but I didn’t see any qualifying option in Grid Legends’ events, whether career mode or user-made. You can set up a race according to how the drivers finished in previous events (either in an order or reverse). Human drivers are limited by the arcade-racing rule of starting at the bottom third of the field. You must race against an AI that is less difficult if you wish to win. If you are looking for a challenge then podium finishes may be possible.

Codemasters needs to offer some sort of qualification option. Grid Legends launches, almost as much as I hope they can tone down the third-person camera to something more like 2019’s Grid, which has the stop/go acceleration effect, but it’s not as pronounced. In the game’s visual options, there are a number of settings for the camera’s shaking, but nothing for the zooming in and out that I find so off-putting.

The preview build we were shown didn’t have any of what will likely be Grid LegendsThe most important selling point is the narrative mode, written by Brad Kane. Ghost of Tsushima’s lead writer). Called “Driven to Glory,” the story will make use of Grid Legends’ 130-car fleet, and a track roster that Codemasters says is the biggest ever, in a sports drama that the studio says is inspired by Netflix hits like Formula 1: Survive by Driving.

Codemasters pitched “Braking Point,” the narrative mode for F1 2021, in exactly the same way, and while its story was well written and well acted, it had no replay incentive and didn’t extend into the rest of the game. It is not. Grid Legends, progression will carry over from “Driven to Glory” into the career mode. It’s a wise move that I wish “Braking Point” had tried with F1 2021’s career.

Without making changes to prioritize racing, however Looking like you’re racing, I have questions about how much I’ll feel like I belong in “Driven to Glory’s” best-in-the-world drivers’ fraternity, and the all-comers challenge of the fictional Grid World Series. Although I won several races, my skillset was less impressive than my speed and skill.

Grid Legends Launches February 25, on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Windows PC (via Origin, Steam), Xbox One and Xbox Series X.
