Good Omens fans react to season 2’s ending
A relatively happy and cozy season is over. Good Omens broke everyone’s hearts — but in the best way possible.
[Ed. note: This post contains major spoilers for the ending of Good Omens season 2.]

The second season of the Prime Video show — based on the 1990 fantasy book by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett — ends with a big damn kiss. Except, instead of being a happy climax to a love confession, it’s a tearful goodbye. Demon Crowley, played by David Tennant, was on his way to tell angel Aziraphale, Michael Sheen (that he loves her), about their love. But the angel stopped him and told him something else. Aziraphale accepted the Metatron’s offer to be a leader in heaven, and he hopes to rebuild heaven with Crowley by his side. But Crowley doesn’t want to be an angel again, or play by anyone’s rules. After a kissing Aziraphale, Crowley turns her down and they go separate ways.
It’s a moment that could have been a huge disappointment for fans who’ve waited literal decades for these two characters to romantically get together.
The consensus, however, seems to be the opposite: that this tragic ending is hurtful. You can also see our other articles. good.
They compare this to the devastating endings of other TV shows, including The First Season Finale. Our Flag Means Death, the Priest and Fleabag’s breakup, and (funnily enough) the 10th Doctor and Rose’s premature parting of ways. Good OmensThe story has all the bittersweet, touching romances that you love with the extra oomph from being queer. Slow burn romances with angst appeal to fans just as much as domesticity.
The most common comparison point is Supernatural — which isn’t surprising given just how much lasting power the sleeping giant fandom has. This is a hilarious parallel when you consider the Heaven and Hell of all. The two are both Good Omens The following are some examples of how to get started: Supernatural End with a confession of love that distinguishes the angel from his romantic partner. However, there are some key differences between Supernatural You can see more examples in these. Our Flag Means Death, FleabagThen, Doctor WhoSure, it’s sad. Supernatural’s abrupt awkward love confession (and subsequent immediate death) was a source of anger and frustration (and a million memes thanks to the ridiculous timing of the episode, but that’s another story).
Supernatural’s weird one-sided love confession lives on in infamy. Despite the obvious parallels, Good Omens’ tragic love confession is actually an example of how to do it right. For one, this isn’t the final, definitive ending of Good Omens — Minimum, It’s not time yet. Neil Gaiman said on Tumblr that a hypothetical season 3 would be the “last act” of the story, even if that hypothetical season hasn’t yet been announced by Amazon (and thanks to the writers and actors’ strikes, might not be announced for a bit).
The creatives who are behind Supernatural The show never incorporated the jokes about Dean and Castiel coming together into actual plotlines. That, coupled with actor Jensen Ackles’ dismissive behavior, fueled queerbaiting accusations from fans. So, the tragic and out of left field ending — a love confession which immediately ended in a death — understandably soured fans. Dean, after an angel confesses his love, dies in a completely unrelated manner, but reunites instead with Castiel, the car, and Dean’s brother.
While the story choices are endless, there is a certain consistency to them. Good Omens season 2 — as well as the other examples of this devastating heartbreak canon — make sense. Crowley is bound to want Aziraphale and reject the established order. Aziraphale has still a lot of learning to do, but she believes fixing heaven can get them both what they desire. A relationship is not possible as they are and the way things are. The fans recognize that they have time to mature and to learn, but more importantly there is a possibility for a third series to tie everything up and provide a happy end.
But what’s a happy ending without 100K of slow-burn angst before it? Till that hypothetical season 3 manifests, at least there’s plenty of art, memes, and fics to help us cope.
