We’ve been hard at work getting this gloomy world developed for Xbox and we’re happy to share some of those details with you here. As avid players of the board game (both physical and the PC digital version), it’s truly an honor and a pleasure to work on this project. We’re dedicated to capturing the essence of GloomhavenAnd delivering an impeccable gaming experience on Xbox.

Gloomhaven‘s intricacies present a unique challenge when it comes to controller adaptation. We have been working with our team to rework the UI/UX in order to provide seamless gameplay, intuitive controls and make it easy to transition from board games to PC and Xbox. We’re casting some serious spells of convenience here!

It was a real challenge. GloomhavenWe wanted the PC experience to be as smooth and easy to use as possible. Rest assured, there’s no need to tediously move your cursor with the joystick to mimic a mouse – we’ve completed a full remapping of the controls. Some of our first iterations required way too many fingers and buttons to be pressed for a normal human being, but we’re no Harrower! Probably.

Let’s talk a bit more about controls!

Bring GloomhavenXbox was an experience that I will never forget. Board games don’t have limited buttons. They do not have online cross-platform co-op either – so you can imagine the challenge.

The analog stick was the best choice for handling all of the camera movement. We were looking to make controls that are as intuitive and simple as possible. We decided to set the game up so that you can move through lists with the left analog stick. In some cases, such as the Merchant screen, lists would intersect. We divided focus between lists after several UX revisions so that the user can select which section of the interface to use. We also changed the design of the interface to make it more Xbox-friendly by merging the filters for Buy/Sell when talking to the Merchant.

The battles were where we experimented the most. During the enemies’ or allies’ turn on PC, your camera focus was taken from you while the unit’s animation played, but you had the mouse to hover over different elements and plan your strategy. The console version of the game made it difficult to jump between list and control. This auto-control was removed from the camera to give the player more control over how they see everything.

The combination of selection and confirm with holding and pressing the A button was also a challenge. The overlapping between these two buttons had to be as seamless as possible. We encountered several problems, such as when you’re selecting enemies to strike on the board, but your focus is currently on the second enemy. On the console, you can choose to attack all of them or just the first one. The team has done a great job in making the game as convenient as possible. There will be no enemy left unassailable, and no card won’t be selected.

Get ready for a journey of epic proportions, filled with danger, mystery and adventure. The newest version of the popular game, With Gloomhaven on Xbox, you’ll have the power to shape your destiny and forge your own path in this immersive fantasy realm. The game is already available for pre-order on Xbox, before the release date of September 18.
