Gearing Up for Your First Hunting Trip in Wild Hearts

Electronic Arts announced that it was partnering with Koei Tecmo to develop the next great hunter game. My imagination went wild when I imagined a superhuman hero hunting down supernatural beasts and fighting them in thrilling battles. Maybe wolves and tigers? Perhaps even a dragon.

After its release last month and thanks to an earlier hands-on preview, I was able to learn more Wild Hearts is aspiring to be a mystical game “where hunters craft ingenious mechanisms to face giant nature-infused beasts in fantasy feudal Japan,” with some innovative and entertaining new features fans of this genre are sure to enjoy.

Tame a Wild World

Wild HeartsS will be available on Xbox Series X|S early next year, is an action-adventure game playable either solo or with up to two other players online (with cross play support) in a roughly 30-hour story campaign. Playing with others allows you to experience one battle or the whole campaign. You also have the option of side quests. Your party size is used to determine the difficulty. The loot you get is not determined by individual performances but is a function of how many people are in your group. You have the option to customize your home base. This is visible to any other players that join your game. Although there are some gathering and farming activities, crafting is not required. Wild HeartsIt’s all about hunting. As the trailer shows, “taming a world gone wild”.

Fantasy-Filled Feudal Japan is your home

Wild HeartsIt takes place in four open-world settings located in Azuma (a fantasy world that is based on feudal Japan). Each landscape is themed according to a season. This includes a place with a large cherry blossom tree in spring, a distant island on the sea for summer and a fortress in wartime for fall. A castle that’s frozen in winter. You can access each of these locations from Minato. This central hub is where you plan your hunts and collaborate with other hunters.

It is breathtakingly beautiful, and it transports you back to medieval Japan. The landscapes are filled with Japanese traditional architecture. There is also lanterns, stones, lanterns and cherry blossom trees. Cranes wading in streams adds an incredible sense of wonder. Couple this with an amazing soundtrack and brilliant voice acting, and you truly feel like you’re in “the land of the rising sun.”

Be Careful with Your Weapons

Availability of weapons during my time at the Wild Hearts demo was limited, but I’m told the full game is said to have eight unique weapon types, each with several configuration options resulting in hundreds of variations. They will include katanas and bows as well as hammers and a bladed umbrella. Their effectiveness against prey will vary depending on the type of weapon and its upgrade. There will be a variety of options for armor that can also be upgraded.

Craft Ancient Technology

How do you make it work? Wild HeartsKarakuri stands out from all other fantasy hunting games. This feature is unique and based on ancient technology. You can craft items to assist in combat, crossing the terrain, or any other purpose. These included platforms and springboards that could be used to gain height over prey or counter their attacks. I’m told there will be many more tools available to hunters, including gliders, zip lines, catapults, flares that can stun your prey, and bombs that do massive damage. Karakuri is also useful for crafting practical and cosmetic items, such as a blacksmith table and campsite.

The Creatures of Unusual Sizing: Beware

Wild HeartsThe core of ice hockey is a game about hunting. However, before you feel bad for the wildlife and begin to worry, most encounters will be with predatory creatures searching for their next meal. Kemono are mysterious beings known for blending animals and nature. They were largely inspired from real-world animals.

Many of the encounters I had in the demo and showcased in the gameplay trailer were those found in Japanese folklore, like rats, boar, and a very menacing ape-like creature, only they’re infused with nature, and quite large. A Kemono covered in moss was able to influence the environment by causing vines to sprout up above the ground. The other was bonded to lava. However, all the Kemono share one common trait: they are massive, deadly and want to kill you.

Wild HeartsOmega Force is developing the game, which was created by the Japanese development studio Koei Tecmo and the creators of the fabled Dynasty Warriors Samurai Warriors series.
