Five RPGs You May Have Missed In 2021

Cris Tales

There is a constant stream of new video games hitting the market every year. This makes it difficult for gamers to keep tabs on everything. Fans of RPGs had an excellent 2021. There were many great indies and new games from popular franchises. Bandai Namco brought us Tales of Arise, and Scarlet Nexus. Remakes and remasters, like Nier: Replicant, Mass Effect Legendary Edition, and Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, provided plenty of nostalgia, while also bringing new fans into the fold. With Shin Megami Tensei V, and Neo: It Ends With You, long-awaited entry finally made their debuts. And that’s only scratching the surface. Below are five worth-while RPGs that you may not have noticed.

Eastward

Change, Computer, or Mac

Eastward will appeal to those who enjoy retro-style RPGs. There’s so much to like about Eastward, including the whimsical environment, pixel art, and the close bond between John and Sam. This quirky adventure offers many surprises. You will need to use frying pans and bombs in order to uncover the mysteries of this bizarre world. You can play Earth Born, an arcade game that pays tribute to Earthbound. You won’t find a better RPG than this one. It has simple mechanics, unique settings and is easy to learn. For more information, read our review.

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox

Switch, PS4, PS4 PC, Stadia

The long-running Ys series is still a success and shows it’s not afraid to take risks with Ys IX, Monstrum Nox. Adol is still the main character, with his red hair and ability to summon monsters. He meets other people with the same abilities, each one having their own unique skills to assist him in traversing the city and taking on evil. Exploration is fun thanks to the unique ways of traversal and greater verticality. The big bosses are great and there’s lots of action. The story takes you to wild and unexpected places. Cris Tales

PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One Switch, PS4, Xbox One, PC, Stadia

Cris Tales is a visually stunning and interesting concept that will keep you interested and give you more reasons to stay. Cris Tales is a loving tribute to RPGs. It takes familiar tropes like time travel and turns them into something more than just a joke. Cris Tales’ unique time-hopping mechanism allows you to simultaneously view the past, present and future. This makes it a great game for exploration as well as interesting opportunities to battle. You can use a water spell to attack an enemy’s strong shield. Then, move to the future to make its defense rust. The game is fun to see the effects of your actions on the timelines. If anything proves something, it’s the fact that there’s no way out. Read our review.

Wildermyth

PC

This character-driven, procedurally-generated tactical RPG has received its share of acclaim, but still managed to fly under many people’s radars. While its PC exclusivity may explain some of it, you should still be able to use it, especially if it appeals to those who enjoy playing table-top RPGs. Just like running your own Dungeons & Dragons campaign, you gear up a team, make decisions that affect their story, and take on hordes of enemies in various turn-based combat setups. Wildermyth lets you take any characters from previous campaigns into your next campaign. Our own Dan Tack said it best in his review: “If you’ve always wanted a fantasy Dungeons & Dragons stylized XCOM game, Wildermyth might be exactly what you’re looking for. Worldwalker does a great job of designing a game that revolves around random storytelling. Read the full review here.

Disgaea 6, Defiance Of Destiny

PS4, Switch

A new Disgaea entry was released this summer for those who enjoy strategy/RPGs, but still like zaniness or outrageous antics. The new entry has a more straightforward interface, but retains the fun and humorous strategy combat which allows you to chain insane damage. You play the role of Zed, a zombie who can use Super Reincarnation to bring back his life each time he dies. One of the best storylines is Zed’s determination to improve himself and those around him. The series has received some new paint thanks to graphic upgrades as well as a divisive auto-play feature. This entry is likely to be a favorite if you have played previous entries. And if it’s your first Disgaea rodeo, this is also a great place to begin.
