First Dragonlance book in more than 30 years arrives in 2022
Dragonlance: Dragons of Deceit, the next book in the Dragonlance series of Dungeons & Dragons novels, arrives on Aug. 9, 2022. Created and written by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, it’s the first new book in the Dragonlance series published in 36 years. After months of legal battle with Wizards of the Coast, the book was finally released. Weis announced the news on Twitter.
The Dragonlance Chronicles began with D&D’s original publisher TSR in 1984, with Dragons of Autumn Twilight. The original trilogy introduced Krynn to its world, as well characters Tanis Half Elven, Raistlin and Flint Fireforge. Also included were the novels. Dragons of Winter Night Dragons of Spring Dawning. Numerous tabletop adventures were published simultaneously as part of the Dragonlance franchise. The world of Krynn and its characters have since made cameos in many D&D publications, including recent game books for 5th edition.
Weis, Hickman and others filed a lawsuit against Wizards of the Coast to discover that there were three more Dragonlance books. They claimed that they had been in breach of their contact and sought a jury trial as well as damages worth $10 million. This issue was finally settled in January 2021. In September, Hickman told Polygon in an interview that he was “gratified” with the settlement.
