FFXIV Adventurer Plate and instant portrait guide
Since FFXIV Patch 6.3 is out. Adventurer Plates, instant portraits, and patch 6.3 are now available in beta. After loading into multiplayer content, you will be able to see every character individually. However, the launch seems kind of buggy and it’s hard to tell why issues are popping up.
We have an overview of how it works after playing with the beta version. While these aren’t the best solutions for all people, they helped us.
What is the difference between portraits and Adventurer plates?
Adventurer PlatesThe Warrior of Light cards are small and can be customized to display any information. You can access and set them them up through the “character” button and then by selecting “Adventurer Plate” on the dropdown.
On the plate, you can set one snapshot of your character to appear by selecting “edit portrait.” This snapshot will appear as your Adventurer Plate photo even if you are not currently that job or wearing that set of armor.
For example, if my Adventurer Plate is a Red Mage wearing a raincoat, it will show up as that — even if I’m playing as Warrior, or if my Red Mage has a different outfit equipped.
This should not be confused with portraits, which is available from the next dropdown option under “Adventurer Plate.” You can use these as “instant portraits” which is what your party members will see when you do multiplayer content.
But, to make sure your instant portrait works, you have to be wearing the same gear in the portrait as you are in the content you’re runningEven if the equipment is glamorous, it’s important to inform them. You should always notify the manufacturer if you have changed an equip, no matter how glamorous. Resave your photo before running content, or you’ll get the default mugshot portrait.
If you are playing as the job represented in your Adventurer Plate, the plate’s portrait, your instant portrait, and your current equips also must be wearing the same gear or you will get the default mugshot. Whew.
You can place an error triangle near the portrait if your gear doesn’t match.

Why isn’t my instant portrait working?
You probably have mismatched gear that you aren’t even aware of. Another answer to this question is that portraits can seem a little jumbled, and you may need to tweak them to get them to work.
To fix the problem, you can try any one of these:
- Save your Adventurer Plate portrait. Next, save the instant match job portrait.
- Check that your equipment is up-to-date. The rotating arrows at your character menu must be marked grayed if they are not. If it wasn’t, update it and resave your portraits.
- Resave portraits that were saved before Patch 6.3.
- Although it may seem silly, you should carefully inspect your gear in between the Adventurer Plate portrait or instant portrait. We had an un-glamoured ring causing us problems for ours, which we didn’t even realize was glamoured in the portrait, since it’s not part of our glamour plate. Yeesh.
Unsynced, you can check if your portrait is working by going into any job while unsynchronized. Unsynced allows you to jump into the queue quickly and leave after you have checked your portrait.
