Hi everyone, I’m Tomasz from Flying Wild Hog, Lead Producer on Evil WestS.|S. Today, I’d like to dive into the unique world we’ve created for Evil WestWe will tell you all about our gothic horror, western, joyride, as well as the environments and inspirations.

Weird West, a very niche game genre, was exciting to us. We’ve been inspired by works which take established tropes and put very interesting spins on them. Take Mike Mignola’s “Hellboy” comic for example, which takes gothic elements and makes them lighter with a laid-back main character. 

Brian Azzarello’s “Moonshine” comic does a similar thing, mixing vampire tropes with real history to great effect. Another great example is Netflix’s “Castlevania” series, where the monster hunter profession is cast in a different light by very human and vulnerable characters.

Evil WestThe European vampires are removed and planted in the American West. The world began to naturally grow once we had done that. Now we only needed to be open-minded enough for our imaginations and take us on adventures into dark and beautiful places. Vampires are in Evil WestThe wild west has to progress, or die. They have found a dangerous new power. A lightning-powered gauntlet was created by the Rentier Institute to combat vampire hunting. It is both deadly and beautiful. 

In terms of both setting and gameplay, this gauntlet worked perfectly. Vampire hunters now have something new to combat the increasing threat. We also had an incredible lightning-powered melee-centric weapon for combo-based fast-paced combat and a dramatic, gory presentation. Plus all the guns, of course, can’t forget about the guns! To name just a few, shotgun, rifle and flamethrower.

Wild West does not mean only canyons or rocky deserts. The Wild West’s darker side is where sunsets turn the landscape reddish and creeping monsters mix with the stretching shadows. In abandoned shacks, gaunts perform dark rituals and folklore creatures stalk the darkness.

A wide range of Wild West-inspired places are available, from banks to trains to desert towns to mountains to dark skies, plus other hidden treasures like subterranean burials or smoke-choked industrial plants.

We also had to increase the scale and stakes of each location as we progressed, which resulted in some truly amazing stages leading up to the final. Although the dusty border town of desert is an ideal place to begin, even that location can be twisted.

The mood we were trying to create in terms of art direction required a lot more bending of reality. It should feel familiar, yet different enough for people to recognise it. To create a gothic and sinister atmosphere for the wild west, we built a few extra floors in most buildings. We also added more balconies to some of them. It makes the buildings seem to loom over you, while still resembling the traditional western frontier towns you’ve seen in your favorite movies.

We hope you’ve enjoyed this dip into the world of Evil WestIt was inspired by. The whole team has worked super hard on nailing the game’s feel and style. I can’t wait for you all to punch your first vampire in half. It’s going to be one hell of a ride!
