Evil Wizard is Now Available on Xbox Series X|S: The Making of True Evil

Hello everyone! I’m Diego Ordoñez, a lead programmer at Rubber Duck Games. This humor-filled RPG is a great way to spend your time. It all Begins

Start working on Evil WizardI was looking to make a funny game. Similarly, characters who use magic such as mages or wizards have always intrigued me. Magic is a great concept from the perspective of a storyteller, because it gives the designer the ability to design the rules that are needed to have logical gameplay and believable stories. Finaly, I needed a way to tie everything together. I chose a clever hook. I decided to go with a twist and tell the story about what happens to a final boss after he’s been defeated. The setting allowed me to play with humor in a new way. Each gamer can recall a time when the main character was a superhero who had to overcome an evil wizard. This made me feel that players could immediately understand the setting and context of the story.

Find the Humor

After the character dialogues were written, I began writing the jokes. You can find them throughout the game. There are many examples of this throughout the game. The Evil Wizard mocks the NPCs. Enemies chat with each other in hilarious cinematics. And there are even instances where the Evil Wizard speaks directly to the player. The idea of breaking the fourth-wall was something I always found interesting. Video games are a great way to break the wall, as the player controls the protagonist.

When we began production, humor appeared in parts other than the dialogue. Ruben Gómez was in charge of the aesthetics of the game and he happens to be a very funny guy as well. Ruben Gomez implemented many funny moments in the game, including environmental art and collectables. They can be seen in nearly every level, such as hanging underwear on the castle roof, or paintings of Evil Wizards with popular characters. There are also a number of collectable rubber ducks that refer to pop culture icons.

Additionally Pablo Pérez, our pixel art animator, did a wonderful job of creating funny animations with enemies and NPCs. There are many examples, including concept art like a chef swinging a pan of red-hot chilies to attack and the death animations for most enemies.

Action, What about it?

When developing Evil WizardWe wanted to create a game that would appeal to players who didn’t like the combat system or the exploration design of other games. We wanted to develop a good combat system and exploration design for the players that didn’t find Evil WizardVery funny. The combat was made the centerpiece of our game. It is a pillar in the game, with a wide range of bosses to choose from, as well as optional mini-bosses. There are also dozens of elements and spells. Inspire by other action-RPGs and metroidvanias we created a world of intertwined rooms. To reach the last level, the player has to traverse the castle. The levels were filled with secret rooms, puzzles random encounters of combat and humorous cinematics. We wanted to create a balance between the combat experience, the exploration aspect and the humor. Gonzalo Banki Martínez, our producer, managed most of the initial design of the castle rooms. Every room is a different setting, such as the patio of the castle, the armory or lab, or the dungeon. The rooms are connected in a number of ways so the players can explore and find hidden secrets.
