Edge of Eternity: Exclusive Interview with Midgar Studio Founder Jérémy Zeler-Maury

If you didn’t catch the JRPG news a few weeks back, here it is. Edge of EternityAvailable now with Xbox Game Pass or PC Game Pass. Let’s take a look at the origins of this colossal project from the French company Midgar Studio with its founder, Jérémy Zeler-Maury.

What was the story? Edge of Eternity born?

Originally, we were making small games that followed market trends, and we saw that they weren’t necessarily doing very well. So, we thought we’d make one more game, and if it did well, we’d continue, and if it didn’t, we’d stop. Because we loved Japanese games, we made sure to continue making them. Final FantasyWe decided to make a JRPG. Although our initial goal was to create a simple game, we didn’t anticipate its success on Kickstarter. We revised our expectations of the project after we saw how much money was raised and what the comments were from the players. Today, when we look back, it becomes clear that our journey began as amateurs. It was this learning that has made us professionals. We don’t regret the experience at all, it was very formative, very enriching.

Which summaries would you make?

It’s a mix between Japanese and Western influences. We are used to seeing a variety of themes and narrative elements in Western RPGs. The WitcherFor example. At the intersection of many worlds, we are. To better understand the code of the genre we respect it. The game features an alien race attacking the world and unleashing a virus to decimate the inhabitants. Our main character’s mother is affected by the virus, so our heroes set out on a journey to discover a cure. The adventure quickly becomes clear that even appearances can deceive. We will be able to meet new characters and discover more.

Any JRPG is centered around fighting. Can you please tell us about the fighting?

With a turn-based combat system, we wanted the gameplay’s first layer to look familiar to JRPG fans. However, we also added an additional layer of gameplay. It allows for you to maneuver your characters while fighting, and to incorporate the surroundings into the encounters. Divinity 2.For example. Special abilities can be combined to form combos. You have the ability to capture the enemy from the side, for example. We have updated a system that was once more traditional with western components.

How did you handle this problem?

Personally, I prefer to play linearly. Even then, it is often between 25-30 hours of gameplay in a straight line. We’ve also incorporated accessibility features, such as a system that ensures that your enemies are always at the same level as your team. The experience can be customized by players, allowing them to choose whether they want more or less guidance and consistent challenges, for instance.

What role has the community had in shaping this game’s evolution since it was released to early access?

Thanks to the great feedback we received from our players, this has been a huge help. We were able to rebalance the game, add enemies, characters, make battles more complex, rework the animations to make the cities livelier… and include Japanese dubbing. We received many requests to include Japanese dubbing as this is part the rules of the genre. We worked closely with a Japanese editor who performed the voice acting.

Edge of Eternity

Also, you had the opportunity to collaborate with Yasunori Mitchellsuda. How did that collaboration happen?

You can find more information here HoverOur previous game was ‘, which we collaborated with Hideki Naganuma (the composer of ). Jet Set Radio. We just sent an email… We realized that these people were working for a lot of big companies, in a very structured environment, and that getting out of the box and collaborating with an independent studio could make them very happy. And it was the same with Yasunori Mitsuda, we made him discover new orchestras… He was as happy to work with us as we were with him, it allowed him to experiment new things. The French-Japanese collaborations are really part of the identity of our studio, it’s really something I want to continue to develop in the future.

Game Pass: What are your thoughts as both a developer or a player of the game?

It will enable us to reach more people. Microsoft’s support for independent teams, taking crazy bets, is really cool for developers. Personally, as a gamer, I didn’t play that many indie games, and with Game Pass, I’ve been able to try a lot of titles. Cross-platform is something I like. I use the cloud a lot. I install my game on the PC, I go on the TV, then on the phone… Right now, I’m playing The World is not Saved by AnyoneThis is awesome! It’s the discovery that I like, it forces me to think outside the box.
