Down the Rabbit Hole with The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience
What happens when you combine the world’s most powerful game engine with cutting-edge console technology? The Matrix awakens: Unreal Engine 5 ExperienceA new demo in tech demonstrates exactly that.
Created by members of the original “The Matrix” movie team including Lana Wachowski, James McTeigue, and John Gaeta in collaboration with teams across both Epic Games and partners, this experience offers a glimpse at what interactive storytelling and entertainment created with Unreal Engine 5 could look like in the future.

The demomorphs are neither a film nor a game, but combine elements from both. It is a combination of movie and video with incredibly accurate digital copies of Keanu Reynolds and Carrie Anne Moss. This transforms the cinematic into an interactive adventure that features car chases as well as fast-paced third-person shooter action.
Every time it is run, the driving and shooting sequences are unique. That’s because the car crashes are simulated in real time with Unreal Engine’s high-performance physics system Chaos, so the same crash will never occur twice.

In a similar fashion to how movie-makers live action will search a place to discover the most compelling streets, the team tried out different content options by driving around the virtual city and taking captivating shots. Because this process took place within the virtual environment, it didn’t have the physical constraints of the real world—taking hours to travel from one location to the next, for example.
All of the action in this demo occurs in an enormous open-world metropolis that covers 16 kilometres. It is home to seven million instanced assets. This includes seven thousand buildings, 45.073 parked cars (of whom 38.146 can be drivable), over 265 km of roads and 512 km sidewalks. There are also thousands of intersections, lampposts, manholes and other infrastructures.

The demo is able to handle this geometric complexity thanks to Nanite, UE5’s virtualized micropolygon geometry system. The next generation technology of Nanite has the ability to stream billions (or more) of polygons. This allows for exceptional detail and visual fidelity. An audio generator system that reproduces the sound of bustling cities enhances the sense of place.
The virtual city is impressively photoreal, harnessing Unreal Engine’s powerful lighting systems to deliver highly realistic lighting and reflections throughout the interactive parts of the demo and generate beautiful, realistic soft shadows of the characters in the cinematic element.

A city is more than bricks and mortar, of course—it’s the hustle and bustle as a multitude of people go about their business. Artificial intelligence systems power thousands of vehicles and humans that swarm the streets. Because these actors are part of a global simulation that is constantly evaluated, they effectively exist whether you are looking at them or not—which means they act in a much more believable way.
The Coalition had created some impressive demos during the summer and the team decided to bring Unreal Engine on board so that they could explore the potential of the Xbox console hardware.

Their help enabled the experience to run at an impressive level of performance and quality not just on the Xbox Series X, but on the Series S as well—proving that next-gen content can be experienced on the full range of today’s consoles, benefiting players and Unreal Engine developers alike.
The Matrix awakens: Unreal Engine 5 Experience The next generation interactive experiences will feature stunning photorealism, rich open worlds and more engaging action.
