Discord adds in-app games, an app directory, and Nitro Basic today

Discord announced Monday a new suite of features that will allow users to host social activities such as watching YouTube streams together or hosting a game, like poker, in their client. There’s also an app directory coming to the client to make installing useful applications to your server easier, a new lower Nitro tier, and a few other interesting additions.

Voice chat users can create a queue for an Activity by clicking on the rocketship icon in the lobby. You can choose from standard activities like poker or chess. However, there are also some unique games such as the Charades title. Sketch Heads. Discord intends to work with other developers in future Activity releases. Additional details will follow.

Discord noted that many people might find it difficult to install apps in its client. Discord’s in-app directory will allow users to download these apps, including music and other media players or AI images. Discord will provide resources for developers like Discord ecosystem funds and premium app subscriptions.

Nitro Basic is a premium subscription level that has so far been limited to the United Kingdom. It will be available worldwide on October 20. Nitro Basic is $2.99 a month, but includes possibly the most important Nitro feature: the ability to use one server’s emojis anywhere else on Discord. Nitro Basic subscribers also receive a profile badge, and file upload support up to 50MB.

Discord stated that new activities start Monday and all users will have access to Watch Together, Putt Party and other features. Access to Nitro will be available for all subscribers. The app directory will begin to open to users on Tuesday, with a exclusive group of developers getting access to Discord’s new monetization options.
