The story begins with the detective getting up from a bad hangover and finding his bottomless underwear. This is not the best situation for a Monday morning. But it gets worse, as you discover that you’re supposed to be in this part of the city to hunt down a murderer. You are now wondering why you have been drinking so much and what you should do next.

It’s up to you whether you find and interrogate witnesses, explore the streets and apartments for clues, or get distracted by the many side quests like hunting down an ultra-fashionable tracksuit (it’s so worth it). You can even choose to walk around in your underwear and continue last night’s party if you wish. Expect to receive some confused remarks from people that you meet.

Because your success at some of the most crucial moments are determined by dice rolls like tabletop RPGs, this is why you will be successful in others. For example, if you want to come up with an artistic idea to impress the young rebel Cindy, you’ll need to roll a certain number with the dice. If you fail then don’t worry, as you can try again later or find some other way to achieve your goal. Maybe it will be even easier because Cindy might feel sorry.

That’s not the only reason we encourage you to embrace failure in Disco Elysium, though – it’s in the failure scenarios that some of the funniest parts are found. For example, if you try to avoid paying for your room at the hostel by running away like a rockstar and fail, you’ll dive into the air and spin around to give the manager two middle fingers before crashing into a woman in a wheelchair. It’s still quite rockstar, in its own way…

We recommend you to improve your abilities if you keep falling short. This will open up opportunities for new solutions. You have 24 skills in total and each corresponds to one of your detective’s physical or mental abilities, such as Logic and Hand/Eye Coordination. You might be surprised to learn that these skills exist in person and speak directly to your mind. It’s up to you whether you listen to their advice or spend several minutes arguing with them.

That’s not the only thing you’ll do inside your detective’s head. You have the Thought Cabinet. This is where ideas can be cooked up until they become fully-fledged thoughts. Thoughts usually come with both positives and negatives so you’ll have to balance them carefully. Positivity can open up dialogue and raise skill levels. Negatives include losing empathy and being hurt when you express your opinions.
