Diablo IV’s Itemization And Paragon System Overhauls Headline Quarterly Update

We are now in the fourth quarter of this year, so another quarterly update is coming from Blizzard’s Diablo IV team. This update for the demonic RPG is focused on important topics such as itemization and progression to endgame.

As always, Blizzard releases these updates for Diablo IV every few months, and the entire blog for this edition can be found right here. With the return of the +Skill stats, first, there are items. With class skill points coming back, it was only a matter of time until we saw gear that would affect the ability trees. This means your weapons or armor are able to bestow rank-ups for your classes skills, increasing proficiency for spells or attacks, sometimes even giving you access to skills many levels before you’d normally have them!

As we continue to talk about items, this blog reiterates how important legendary items are in class build and progression. The legendary stats will now appear on multiple item slots instead of one. This allows for more customization options. New vendor, the Occultist, will let players transfer the skills of one legendary item to another. Below, you can see a Barbarian’s axe with all of its stats, and the essence made from it that can be imposed onto a different piece of gear.

We should mention customization. Diablo IV’s final game will feature a new Paragon system. The Paragon Board will be available to players at level 50. As characters earn Paragon experience, the goal is to complete tiles. Initially, start on the board’s center tile. Then, like Final Fantasy XII’s licensing board, claim any tiles that are adjacent to those you have already filled in. You can modify sections with glyphs, and some tiles may be marked as magic or rare. The claimed tiles will be positioned at the edges of the board. This allows you to attach a unique, new board with your own legend tile and continue creating the character.

Capping off the quarterly report is a fascinating deep dive into the game’s visual effects. The report provides a lot of information about the visual philosophy and explains why certain things appear the way that they do. If you dig technical breakdowns, make it a point to set aside some time to read that section and watch the videos that accompany it.

And that’s it for this quarter’s scheduled Diablo IV info. While much progress is being made, it was recently stated that Diablo and Overwatch may be further away than previously expected. We’ll just have to patiently wait for more updates, one of which we know will only be a few short months away.
