Diablo IV: Talking the Open Beta With the Game’s Director
The gates to hell are opening, and they’re ajar. Diablo IV We are close to the Open Beta. The Beta program will be open to all who pre-ordered it (and everyone else) starting Friday, March 17, for those who ordered the game. huge amount to play ahead of the game’s launch of June 6 – and will even offer rewards for the final game to those who pass its many challenges.
Ahead of the Open Beta, we caught up with Game Director Joe Shely to learn about what’s in store – and his personal recommendations for what to do in your early visit to Sanctuary. After that, we’ve also got all the key details to help you prepare:
Xbox Wire: Which side quests do you suggest players do in the Open Beta? Any recommended side quests?
Joe Shely: We are offering an extensive experience in Diablo IV’s early games for the Open Beta. Players should go through Act 1 of the Fractured Peaks Zone story campaign and then explore the rest of the world. Explore the world and take the World Events route. You will also be able liberate Strongholds, complete side quests, as well as explore the many dungeons found throughout the region. You’ll also have the opportunity to try all five classes of play during Open Beta on March 24. I hope that everyone has the chance to do so and lets us know your thoughts.
One of my favorite side quests that you will be able to experience in the Open Beta is ‘The Woodsman of Nevesk.’ I won’t go into spoilers, but it is a great example of how we are approaching storytelling in Diablo IVTo highlight the difficulties of Sanctuary’s citizens and the fact that a simple task can lead to a long chain of quests, which will deal with the serious consequences of your actions.

XW: Are there any secrets included that you don’t expect all players to find? No spoilers!
JS. There are many things in this Open Beta I am excited for players. Sanctuary holds many surprises and you’ll be able to experience them as you explore Fractured Peaks. Keep an eye out for ‘Altars of Lilith’ hidden around the world. Some will be tough to find but you’ll be rewarded with a boost to your character’s power, so be sure to explore your surroundings well. You might be surprised by unexpected situations that come up that test your wits and speed of reaction.
XW: What have you learned from previous public tests, and how has that altered what’s available in the Open Beta?
JS: We’ve done many internal and closed tests where we learned a lot and iterated on the game over the course of development. Thanks to the invaluable feedback we received, all aspects of game development were improved including balance and class skills trees. It will be the first time we have an open-public test. We look forward to all of your feedback. Diablo IVThis is the first time.

XW: How will you benefit from the Open Beta before June’s full release?
JS. We’re holding the Open Beta well in advance of our official launch date of June 6. This is so that we can take advantage of as much feedback received during these weekends. Players will provide valuable feedback and insight on issues such as balance and flagging bugs. We also expect to hear suggestions and improvements that would make the game more engaging or intuitive. One of our biggest priorities will be testing the server infrastructure so that we can provide the best possible experience on launch day.
XW: What class/playstyle would you suggest for someone who is completely new to Diablo?
JS: Diablo IV is all about player choice and we do not want to force any player, new or veteran, down a path they don’t want to go down. All classes have an easy learning curve starting from the time you create your character. Once you have earned enough talent points and gained leveling, you can choose which path you want to go in the talent tree. This will allow you to unlock passive skills and new abilities one by one. You will be introduced gradually to the playstyles of the different types, and you can experiment to see what your capabilities are. It will be possible to quickly respec your talents points, so that you are able to experiment with various builds and find the one you feel most comfortable with.
