Destiny 2: Season of the Haunted beginner’s guide

Season of the Haunted has begun Destiny 2’s 17th season. The Leviathan has appeared above the Moon, but it’s not the same as it was before. The ship has been engulfed by darkness, causing it to be corrupted along with some passengers. The season brings back fan favorites like Austringer, Beloved and other weapons.

The Return of the Leviathan

A new location is being brought back, the Derelict Leviathan. It’s a corrupted and darkened version of the Leviathan ship that was previously housed in the old season. Destiny 2’s first raid, but was removed in Beyond Light). Through the Moon director, you can visit the Castellum, Baths and Pleasure Gardens.

New currencies

You have five options for currencies to be used during the Season of the Haunted.

Vestiges Of DreadDrop from performing general activities such as killing enemies and patrolling, or opening Leviathan chests. They can be used at the end a Nightmare Containedment tier three to obtain bonus loot. It costs 500 Vestiges. After a seasonal upgrade, you can keep more.

While you’ll fill up on these naturally once you finish the weekly quest, the fastest way to get 500 is to complete patrols and loot chests in the Castellum.

Bound PresenceYou can get them from your bosses during the Nightmare Containment activity. They can also be used to open the bonus chest at end of Sever. Each week, you will receive one Bound Presence for completing the first level three Nightmare Contentment. They are then randomly dropped.

You’ll get Opulent Umbral EnergyYou can spend 500 Vestiges Of Dread after a Nightmare Containment of Tier 3. Or you can get the Season Pass. These can be used to concentrate Umbral Engrams at the Crown of Sorrow’s HELM.

Opulent KeysDrop from chests and activities throughout the Leviathan. You can use them to open chests hidden throughout the Leviathan’s zones. Each key gives a hint as to where it’s located.

Figments for DarknessThey can be used to unlock upgraded versions of the Crown of Sorrow. These can be earned through seasonal challenges or through the Rewards Track at Crown of Sorrow.

Neue weapons

The season features 10 brand new weapon craftables. Six of these weapons are tied directly to the season, the Haunted Weapons. Four weapons are returned from Season of the Opulence.

Haunted weapons

  • Kinetic Auto rifle – Firefright
  • Solar Shotgun: Without Regret
  • Arc Glaive – Nezarec’s Whisper
  • Tears of Contrition – Kinetic Scout rifle
  • Void Trace Rifle-Hollow Denial
  • Stasis Rocket Launcher — Bump in The Night

Opulent weapons

  • The Kinetic Hand Cannon-Austringer
  • Solar Sidearm – Drang (Baroque)
  • Solar Sniper – Beloved
  • Solar Submachine gun – Calus Mini-Tool

All of these weapons are craftable, but you’ll need to complete five Deepsight Resonance weapons to unlock each pattern. For a quick refresher in crafting, click here.

The Nightmare Containment activity can be used to earn Haunted weapons. We outline it below. Opulent chests are chests which use the Opulent Keys to earn Opulent weapons.

After unlocking a specific seasonal upgrade at Crown of Sorrow with Figments of Darkness you will be able to use umbral engrams as well as Opulent Umbral Energie to focus your weapons.

Nightmare containment

Nightmare Containment is this season’s primary activity. This event is open to all and takes place at the Castellum of the Derelict Leviathan. There are three tiers that take you around the Castellum to fight enemies and bind Shards of Dread — a fancy, in-game way of saying “kill enemies to progress the event.” Each tier has different tasks you need to complete, so keep an eye on the left side of your screen to see the game’s instructions.

Sever

Sever is a weekly mission which takes you into the Leviathan’s dark underbelly. It also has fun puzzles. Bound Presence can be used to unlock an additional chest with seasonal loot.

If you’re struggling with where to go in Sever, keep looking around. Don’t take too much time, as the game will direct you in the right direction.
