Deltarune Will Be Available For Purchase When Chapter 4 Is Done, Chapter 5 To Arrive Later

Toby Fox, the developer behind critically-acclaimed 2D RPG Undertale in 2015 and a fan favorite 2D 2D game Deltarune Chapter 1 released it as Deltarune Chapter 1 for 2018 This chapter was the first in what we’d later learn is a five-chapter top-down RPG with puzzles, bullet hell sequences, and Final Fantasy-inspired combat, and Chapter 1 was released for free. Fox announced Chapter 2 for 2021 as part of a surprising announcement. Now, the players wait patiently to see Chapter 3 released. Fox revealed today, after more than 2 years, an updated Deltarune strategy. 

Fox will release Deltarune, a product that can be purchased once Chapter 3 is completed. Then, the development of Chapter 5 will begin and be released when ready. Fox hired a game producer “whose sole job will be to accelerate the development of future chapters” to help. 

Fox’s statement in full can be read below. 

It’s time for a new discussion about how to release Deltarune. Chapter 3 will soon be completed. In my original plan, I was going to release Chapters 3, 4 and 5 all at once. The finish line for Chapter 5 still seems a long way off…and nobody wants to have to wait so long. I am not the only one. 

New strategy: no more waiting until Chapter 5. In the future, instead of waiting for Chapter 5, we will focus on making Deltarune available to purchase as soon as we complete Chapter 4. This should help make things more affordable! Already, Chapter 4 has many cutscenes. In addition, I have hired a producer who will work to expedite the game’s development in future chapters. I am very confident about this project’s future. 

I will pause for now on providing more details about the development. Then I’ll let you all know whether the project is nearing completion or if anything funny happens.” 

Fox said in an update elsewhere that it took many trials and errors to understand Chapter 3, but he was confident with Chapter 4: “I am already very sure about the progress we will make.” Also, they note that the people working on Chapter 4 are excited about it and have already started to transition back.
