Deep Rock Galactic is becoming a frantic co-op adventure board game
Deep Rock GalacticThe four-player, cooperative first-person shooter “Ghost Ship Games” is now getting board game treatment. Ghost Ship Games, the franchise founders, announced that they would be partnering up with Mood Publishing in order to bring this tabletop edition to market. A crowdfunding campaign will follow, and it launches on Kickstarter this month. Polygon spoke with lead designer Ole Steiness and Ghost Ship CEO Søren Lundgaard to learn more.
Deep Rock Galactic It was launched as an early-access game on Steam in 2018. The game gained strong support before the official launch of the full version, which will be available for purchase later this year. The To be left 4 deadA co-op, similar to the game “Co-op”, puts you in the shoes of hardworking dwarf miners. A wide range of insectsoid enemies stand in the way of untold riches. The players either return to the platform with armloads full of loot or are swept away by a torrent of chitinous claws.
Traditional first-person shooter games can be difficult to transpose to tabletop. It seems that for every excellent adaptation — like the original Tannhauser or CGE’s Adrenaline — there are four terrible releases. One excellent example served as Steiness’ inspiration: Jonathan Ying’s Doom, The Board GameFantasy Flight Games released the 2016 publication, entitled “The Dreamer”, in 2016. The game combined medium-complexity gameplay and beautiful production values. Ghost Ship and Mood both move in the same direction. They include large miniatures as well as quality upgrades such dual-layer player sideboards.

“[Doom] was the framework,” Steiness told Polygon. “That was kind of the same tabletop presence we were looking for. With all of the tiny dwarfs, we knew that it would be amazing. There are many cool minerals available that can be cut from cave walls. We also have the option to have our own dice. That was the setup, and then we had to dig in and look at the different features.”
Steiness may be best remembered as the designer. Champions of MidguardThe hybrid game combines traditional European mechanics and rich iteration. It’s that same kind of blended approach that he’s taking this time around with Deep Rock Galactic.
“Having both the mineral [extraction]The animal slaughtering [was difficult],” Steiness said, “and the exploration, [but] I think we succeeded quite well in getting them in there.”
You will find a mission book in the game that allows you to pick which challenges you want to tackle during any given session. You will see dwarfs move along the hexagonal grid and perform actions at each turn. The map will show different locations, which will then be shuffled to lay face-down. You’ll know that you’re heading toward an open chamber inside the rock, for instance, but not exactly what you’ll find once you get there. And that’s where the game departs from other FPS-style dungeon crawlers.
“You carve your own way,” Steiness said. “That’s the unique aspect of the game compared to other dungeon crawlers. The game allows you to create your own route, and your own plan for where and when you want to go. […] That’s your challenge as players: How do you utilize the terrain the best way to survive this encounter?”

Steiness explained that various events may be happening all throughout the day from randomly selected decks of cards. Perhaps there’s a hidden loot box to top off your supplies. Maybe there’s a grabber — an insectoid flying enemy — that’s come to pluck one of your dwarfs off their feet. A swarm clock that slowly ticks down adds tension, showing how long it takes for your dwarfs to prepare to face the next enemy creature that comes burrowing from the depths.
The meta-layer is a large part of what the video game has to offer. Deep Rock GalacticIt’s about improving the abilities of each class of dwarfs and upgrading their weapons to make them more useful. What will this style of gameplay look like on the tabletop?
“We discussed that a lot,” said Lundgaard. “It’s definitely a huge part of the computer game. This requires the players to participate in multiple games of the board game at once, as if they were playing into a single computer. GloomhavenOr something similar. This speaks only to one type of player. But it is not the best way to reach all players. So we decided to focus on making a single session of the board game exciting.”
Lundgaard states that upgrades will be made available in each session. This means that the game will end with dwarfs who are more powerful than before. But those upgrades won’t carry over into the next session.

Lundgaard stated that there would be many stretch goals for expansions and new games during this campaign, just like other crowdfunding campaigns. Additional miniatures are also included. Like MULE Deep Rock Galactic’s four-legged robotic mascot.
The final pricing of the game is yet to be determined, however the team stated that it will likely cost the same as other crowdfunded adaptations of board games from video games such as Frostpunk, Darkest Dungeon, SkyrimPlease see the following: The Witcher. Depending on how successful the campaign is, a retail release may be possible. Register to get notified by email when the Kickstarter campaign launches February 10th at 1:00 pm EST.
