DC’s Wonder Twins movie canceled months before shooting set to begin
According to The Hollywood Reporter, a movie that was supposed to be about DC Comics characters called the Wonder Twins has been canceled.
The film had been due to go into production in July, according to THR’s sources, with Riverdale’s KJ Apa and 1883’s Isabel May starring as Zan and Jayna, the teen alien siblings with strange powers which they activate by touching each other. Jayna, on the other hand can be any kind of animal or water. It was originally intended for streaming via HBO Max.
THR was told by insiders that the movie violated two rules set forth by Warner Bros’ new leadership. Discovery media conglomerate. It was first suggested that all films featuring DC characters should aim for theatrical release. This is consistent with Puck’s reporting that this year’s BatgirlFilm may be going to the theaters, having been earmarked by HBO Max for a debut. However, Wonder Twins was thought too “niche” for this option.
A second rule states that HBO Max original movies must have a budget of approximately $35 million. The Wonder Twins movie had a budget of $75 million. That’s deemed too expensive for the task of simply retaining subscribers, when big-budget cinema releases like BatmanCan still be counted upon to make a splash on HBO Max once their theatrical window ends.
In separate news, The Wall Street Journal published that Warner Bros.’ new CEO is David Zaslav. David Zaslav, Discovery CEO, has been cleaning up at the studio and asking questions. After just one month, Zaslav shut down CNN Plus’ streaming service. The Wonder Twins’ film was axed by him in this report.
The decision may sound ruthless, but it’s hard to disagree that the Wonder Twins are esoteric characters. The Wonder Twins were originally created to be animated for TV in 1970. The All-New Super Friends Hour, and weren’t introduced into the DC Comics universe until the mid-’90s. Wonder Twins was due to be written and directed by Adam Sztykiel, who has a script credit on this year’s Dwayne Johnson-starring DC movie Black Adam.
