Dad’s Monster House Brings a Unique Horror Puzzle Adventure to Xbox

Dad’s Monster HouseCotton Game created the game. They specialize in creating puzzle games. Although the artwork is eerie and suspenseful in appearance, it is actually sentimental and has a heartwarming end. It is a joy to be able to share it. Dad’s Monster House will be part of this year’s [email protected] Winter Game Demo Event! With Dad’s Monster House, we wanted to provide those heartbreaking memories a chance at redemption. This game was to be dedicated to scientists, my childhood dreams and those I care about, as well as to memories that have faded.

As a young child, my mom told me about a man-made creature. This story was later discovered to be from a novel. FrankensteinMary Shelley wrote “The Story of Mary Shelley”. The story was fascinating, and I aspired to be a scientist as a child.

There’s a saying that when you’re a kid, you get to have your own dream; but when you grow up, everyone’s dream becomes exactly the same – to be rich!

It was not my dream to become a scientist. I instead became a game designer. In my heart, I regret that I didn’t achieve the childhood goals. That’s why I wanted to develop this game – I wanted to tell a story about a scientist. It had to be dark and eerie as well as emotional. Graphics had to also be distinctive, dark and immediately memorable. The ending must be heartbreaking and sad.

My first sketch was Frankenstein, the man-made creature. This set the art style for the rest of the game’s black and white sketches. My friends warned me against making a game with this look. They said, “Your style is all about colour, what advantage do you have in making black and white games?” They also said, “Puzzle solving, black and white, and narrative? –  you’ll probably make less money combining all those three categories together.” They all seemed to have a point.

I replied, “I know it sounds tough, but I want to take on this challenge – just to live up to my own dreams.” But then they said, “Don’t be so naive. Making a game is about understanding the market and respecting it, don’t live in your own stubbornness and naivety. You seriously need to go study the market first before you set up this new project.”

I thought to myself: even though all of you are saying to not be reckless with ideas, I’m still going to make this game the way I want.

It was difficult enough to win the game. Five years of stumble around later, Dad’s Monster HouseIt is now live. The game features a large number of monsters, as the title suggests. These monsters aren’t demons as such, but they are eerie and not of our world. They are just as intelligent, with hearts, souls and minds as we. In a way, they represent the scientists’ minds in the game. They also represent the real-life personalities of some of us game developers…

While I was playing, I noticed the little creatures in the corner looking lonely as they sat quietly. It was at that moment I also felt isolated.

There’s another saying that “If you’re different, you’re bound to be lonely.” We finished the game. It was a great game that we enjoyed immensely. That was all.

No matter what people say, I would tell them: “In this mediocre world, for once, I just want to live for my stubbornness and childishness.”

We hope this game brings back fond memories of our family and friends.

Freud once said: “Love and work, work and love…that’s all there is.”
What about the struggle and the pain?
When we are forced to choose between ambitions or love
In dealing with such conundrums, we’ve all likely hurt those we hold dearest to us.
It’s in darkness where we often feel the most secure.
Father’s Monster House is my attempt to give those kind of painful memories and their families a chance for redemption.
This is what I have dedicated to scientists.
For those whom I love and for faded memories.
You will find all the answers you need, whether they are for love, science or dreams.

[Gameplay]
Unexpectedly, you receive a call at night that forces you to return home to the house you’ve not been in for over a year. It is up to you to solve each puzzle: from scenes that are intertwined, find clues, and finally uncover the secret of your father.
It is up to you whether this story should be rewritten or ended.

[Features]
Instead of using bright colors and vibrant colours, I chose a black-and white style. You, the player, can feel the emotions of the protagonist through the fragmented narrative, numerous puzzles, and intricate sound design. Continue to unravel the story as you collect more items…
