CD Projekt Red Announces New Witcher Game, Will Be Made In Unreal Engine 5

CD Projekt Red, which is behind Cyberpunk2077 and The Witcher III Wild Hunt, announced today that “the next installment in The Witcher franchise” was in development.

This news was announced by the studio on today’s website. The announcement stated that this Witcher 2 game would “launch a new story for the franchise”. It is not clear who or where the story will take place within CD Projekt Red’s Witcher timeline. The studio revealed that its REDengine engine, which was used by the studio to create Cyberpunk 2077, Witcher 3 and Witcher 3 respectively, is being retired to make way for Unreal Engine 5, the new Witcher game.

This is an exciting moment, as we are moving from REDengine 5 to Unreal Engine 5 and beginning a multi-year strategic alliance with Epic Games,” reads the announcement. It covers licensing as well as technical development for Unreal Engine 5. This partnership will also cover future Unreal Engine versions. Epic Games developers will be closely involved with us, with the goal of helping to tailor the engine for open-world applications.

At this point, no further details regarding this game – such as development time frame or release date – are available.”

CD Projekt Red states that REDengine is still being used by the company to create Cyberpunk 2077.

The news is coming a few decades after studios said the original three Witcher games were the definitive trilogy, and it couldn’t name “The Witcher 4”. However, it revealed more games would be coming from the Witcher universe. The studio may have changed their mind and instead developed Witcher 4; or, if this “new story” will be set in the Witcher Universe.
