Can a Game Make You Turn the Controller Upside Down?

In this post, I would like to comment on a recent experimental feature that we have included. Tenebris Pictura. Is it possible to turn the game controller on its side? Continue reading for the answer. (Spoiler alert: yes, but not all players are willing to).

This is all done in Victorian atmosphere. This game has a variety of mechanics and is very varied. Some of these will have you turning your controller around.

Magnus is attacked by Thronaton, a transdimensional being of great power. Magnus asks for the help of his four horse friends. Magnus’ four equine companions can detach the soul from their body, and so they fight Thronaton together.

The horses are placed on screen from left to right and you control them, evading Thronaton’s attacks and striking back. You have to use four controllers at the same time in order to manage the four horses. One uses the left-stick, another the dpad, a third the right-stick, and a fourth the ABXY buttons. You can evade by pressing left or right, and then attack with up to four horses simultaneously. You read it correctly. The term “finger gymnastics” acquires a new significance when you realize that you have to release your controller and place it on a surface to be able to move four characters simultaneously.

Despite the apparent difficulty, every player understands intuitively what he/she has to do, because the disposition of the horses on screen is equal to the disposition of the four parts of the controller that move them… At least, until the second confrontation. Thronaton, the evil wizard, turns the entire screen upside-down and all four horses have been reversed in relation to the controller. In the meantime, a tutorial appears on screen that explains the only way to solve the problem: turn the controller upside-down. Here is where most players I’ve seen in playtest sessions break out laughing and feel a mixture of tension, incredulity and concentration as they do what the game tells them to do. To my knowledge, I have never seen console controls so deliberately unfriendly. Some players will not do this and, with greater difficulty, they reverse the controls mentally. Naturally, the game allows them to do it. They can’t be distinguished by the game.

This is only one of many unique mechanics introduced by us in our island. Tenebris PicturaSo that you find these and can have fun with them. For example, how to jump into the paintings of the game, survive the spontaneous teleportation of the player or solve puzzles by tearing down walls of the rooms.
