Behind the Scenes of Creating Monsters for Deck of Ashes, Releasing Today on Xbox

Hello everyone! We are AYgames and today we are going to talk about our favorite creation – Deck of Ashes! Although we will focus on the monsters and other unforgettable spawns of the Ash world, let’s start with a bit of a background.

This title, a deckbuilding game for roguelites, follows the unusual path of an antihero gang. All protagonists of this story are members of the Outcasts – the extremely dangerous gang whose criminal success played a dirty trick on them. They even attempted to rob Lady Death. It’s no surprise she outsmarted them (that was their own fault anyway) and the Ash Curse was unleashed upon this world from the very artifact they intended to steal.

Deck building is a turn-based game that uses the Deck of Ashes to its core. The cards you play burn and you will need to spend some resources to bring them back from the ashes (cards won’t be simply restored after each battle).

They now face the terrible consequences for their evil deed. Lucia, a fire witch, was also burned to death, just as it often happens with witches. The dark assassin, Sly, can’t help, but hears the voices of the people he killed. Buck, a fearless warrior almost lost his only love. Magnus is the only person who seems to have benefited from the apocalyptic events, and he wants more. Each of the Outcasts meets the Ash Master and he shows them the way out – they simply have no way to find Lady Death and eradicate the Ash Curse once and for all.

The adventures that followed this encounter shared something: many battles with monsters. Because we created them so horrifyingly and differently, these monsters are something we’re proud of. Players will spend much of their time trying to figure out the best approach for each creature and how to use different card combinations.

Black Knight

Let’s start with the pretty distinctive one – meet the Black Knight!

With a noble power that is eager to rid cities of evil-doers, the embodiment of chivalry mercifully slaps those who are not clean. The Knights, out of all the people and monsters in this world, are most obsessed with duels. Now corrupted by the Ash Curse, the Black Knight challenges his foes on duels by the new rules… but it’s always a fight of equals.

We kept the concept of the knight duel in mind when creating the mini-boss. That’s why one of the key mechanics with this one is the so-called “equality”. You will be replaced by the knight with all of your cards, which means you need to quickly come up with new strategies!

Hell Hound

We cannot talk about monsters without mentioning the Hell Hound.

”If you thinkg your dog has a bad temper, take a look at the Hell Hound. The Hell Hound not only hunts those who desperately want to escape death but also troublessome demons. This dog kills not just because it is ordered by its masters but also because it loves killing. With its demon rider, this huge ex-dog can burn and eat the flesh of victims.

This one is tough. Although inexperienced players may think this is a simple mob, the Hell Hound will teach them quickly. The Hell Hound has an impressive amount of health, and it’s high initiative can make the fight a terrible mess. It is agile and avoids all attacks. This creature can also easily cause you to commit mistakes and lose most of your cards.

Nosferatu

Nosferatu is here! This is the real vampire. If you don’t have the best strategies against it, this vampire will drain your life.

The Ash Master’s warning: “Once upon a time there were plenty of wizards studying the mystery of death. The resurrected legions of fallen soldiers were able to be revived and they are eager to give their lives to become undead. Nosferatu has a superior intelligence than all other undead, and can lead them to battle easily. Although Nosferatu may not seem very dangerous at first, his death restores the health and vitality of his army. That’s why facing Nosferatu is always a challenge and it can easily turn ugly with all these undead creatures fighting till the very end!”

These undead are summoned by this monster. Killing these minions won’t be much help as Nosferatu can easily bring them back from the depths of Hell! Kill him as soon as possible or you’ll be swarmed by the endless wave of undead!

Cannibal

The local scrooge is corrupted by the Ash Curse – Cannibal.

In the beginning, only poor people could afford to resort to cannibalism out of desperation and hunger. The appeal of flesh began to increase, particularly for the wealthy. He is a Cannibal who has been twisted by The Ash Curse. His insatiable hunger makes him try to eat his own flesh. He is hungry and furious, just like a wild animal.

The enemy could give you goosebumps. You can be sure that the Cannibal will resort to all of the tricks in his arsenal. To maintain his health, he can consume the less powerful monsters. Or you could end up being a pudding to this fatty by finding a way of stopping this regeneration!

You will need to upgrade your Camp in different ways depending on how you approach it. There are limited resources and it is unlikely that you can upgrade all of your Camps in one game. So choose carefully!
