Avatar: Way of Water’s Disney Plus streaming date might be early 2023

The Way of Water: AvatarIt is already making box-office waves (ha). The long-awaited sequel to James Cameron’s 2009 sci-fi blockbuster, Water’s WayIt is currently playing everywhere from 3D IMAX and regular 2D. This attraction has made nearly $500 million worldwide. But if you’re waiting to watch this incredibly long movie from the comfort of your own couch (where you can press pause when you need to use the bathroom), how long will you have to wait?

Disney hasn’t yet announced when The Way of Water: Avatar Available to stream. Marvel Cinematic Universe films are available to stream since Shang-Chi, the Legend of the Ten Rings and Shang-ChiCompany has established a minimum of 45 days between theatrical debut and streaming release. If The Way of Water: Avatar The earliest the movie can appear on the platform is January 30 if it’s following that pipeline. However, depending on how successful the movie is, Disney tends to extend that pipeline — Thor: Love and Thunder hit streaming 62 days after its premiere, for instance, and we still don’t have a streaming date for Wakanda for Ever: Black Panther.

Some Disney movies don’t have to adhere to this 45-day limit (see Strange World, which is hitting Disney Plus on Dec. 23) but that fate is usually reserved for films that aren’t performing well at box office. By Avatar: The Way of Water’s smashing success, that doesn’t seem to be the movie’s outcome. Disney may actually want the film to stay in theatres as long as they can. After all, the original film stayed in theatres for 234 consecutive days. While it’s unlikely That Disney will wait thatDisney Plus took long for the sequel to be released. Water’s WayStreaming may not be available until 2023.

It is possible that the movie will be available for rent, download or streaming. However, streaming options may not be available until later. This was also the case for Maverick: Top Gun, which won’t hit Paramount Plus till seven months after its debut (Dec. 22), despite being available to rent in August. If that’s the case, The Way of Water: Avatar could be available to rent or purchase around March 2023 (that’s the 90-day window), but not hit Disney Plus till further into the year.

Also, there is OtherHiccup: Disney remains bound to an unfinished contract between HBO and 20th Century Studios. The contract expires in 2022, but it’s unclear if The Way of Water: Avatar falls underneath it. It is possible that the film will be shown on HBO Max for a short time before it moves onto Disney Plus. Disney has yet to comment on the issue.
