Author of the ARC: Doom tabletop RPG honored by Diana Jones committee

The Diana Jones Award committee, responsible for one of the tabletop gaming industry’s most prestigious peer-selected awards, has named Bianca “momatoes” Canoza as the winner of its Emerging Designer Program for 2022. Canoza will be going to Gen Con Indianapolis, where she is based in the Philippines.

Since 2001, the Diana Jones Award has been presented by the committee. It is a secretive group of industry veterans. Individuals, teams, and even entire movements can all be awarded the Diana Jones Award. The inaugural Emerging Designer Program began in 2021, with the stated intent to amplify “the voices of up-and-coming designers.” The first winner was designer Jeeyon Shim, whose particular style of keepsake games earned her accolades across the industry — including here at Polygon.

ARCMechanizes the tension by using a real-world clock that counts down to each game’s end. ARC’s Doomsday Clock is set at the beginning of a campaign and advances in real time. It takes four hours to complete a campaign of four hours. Now players have an actual action economy. As another important narrative moment slips by, it can take five real-world moments for players to rest, which is a time that passes in the blink of eye in other systems.

Spells and abilities may also require players (not characters) to perform rituals, such as closing their eyes for three minutes to gain True Vision or agreeing to every request for half an hour in order to sway a guard’s mind. Playing is made easier by this fusion of viewpoints and a well-designed, genre-agnostic rule set. ARC feel like an ice bath — bracing and invigorating.

The other finalists are a wide range of independent and powerful voices in this space. These include Fertessa AllyseFunko Games’ game designer, and producer.
