A Streets of Rage movie adaptation is coming
Streets of RageDeadline reports that Derek Kolstad (the John Wick franchise’s creator) is working on a movie adaptation. Kolstad reportedly wrote the film’s script. Sonic the HedgehogEscape Artists and producer dj2 EntertainmentEqualizerDeadline stated that ), will adapt the story.
Sega’s Streets of Rage got its long-awaited videogame sequel in Streets of Rage 4 in 2020, continuing the side-scrolling beat-’em-up series that originated with Streets of RageIt was 1991. The first game was published on Sega’s Genesis console and centered on ex-police fighting a crime syndicate. Following the release of the first game on Sega’s Genesis console, the series was taken off-line for decades. The latest release was a hit; Polygon editor-in-chief Chris Plante, reviewing it for the site, said it was “everything [he] could have wanted from a true Streets of Rage sequel.”
Production company dj2 entertainment has a number of game-inspired live action adaptations currently in development, some of which are based on videogames. Disco Elysium, The Strangeness of LifeAnd It takes two. Sega pursued the adaptation of its back catalogue aggressively, but with little success other than the Sonic the Hedgehog films. Sega has announced previously live-action adaptations for iconic Sega brands, such as Shinobi, Altered Beast and Rent-A-Hero. (Kolstad’s film is the second announced Streets of Rage adaptation.)
