A South Park meme may have inspired Hello Kitty Island Adventure

When Oscar Wilde wrote “life imitates art far more than art imitates life,” I don’t think he was thinking about South Park or Hello Kitty. The quote is still relevant today because a meme from Hello Kitty has been used to name a new video game. Hello Kitty Island Adventure.

The 2006 episode was titled “In a 2006 Episode of South ParkCartman, Kyle Stan and Kenny are out to get revenge against a World of Warcraft troll. Cartman devises a scheme for them to work together to defeat the evil player hiding in Azeroth’s woods.

The boys are shouting out their call to victory in unison, when Butters naively interjects, “I don’t play World of Warcraft,” to which Cartman responds, “Butters, you said you are on your computer all the time.” Butters then says, “yeah, but I’m playing Hello Kitty Island Adventure.”

At the time, this game didn’t exist. The database Moby Games shows that no games with this name have been released. Instead it served as a joke, presumably to make fun of Butters for playing a “girly” game instead of World of Warcraft.

Sanrio used the fake game to create memes, and sometimes even play practical jokes. In 2008, a post from the official Sanrio blog shared an April Fools’ Day announcement for a new MMO Hello Kitty Online expansion pack called “Hello Kitty Island Adventure.” In the announcement, developers said the expansion pack would be, “the first expansion pack in gaming history that will reduce rather than expand an existing game world,” and featured a premise similar to the television show Lost.

The audio clip between Cartman, Butters and Cartman has been used as the base for the TikTok video meme. The meme has been used in many different ways by users, but one popular trend was to make jokes that involved dressing up. Tears of the Kingdom – The Legend of ZeldaSims.

After all, the game became real on June 27. Sunblink announced, in collaboration with Sanrio a life-simulation and adventure video game titled Hello Kitty Island Adventure for iOS devices via Apple Arcade. The game appears to be adorable based on its short trailer. This game combines exploration with life-sim classics like designing homes and characters with island exploration. It features the cute Sanrio characters in a cheerful island environment. The game will be released on 28 July.

It’s not clear why the developers would decide to call back the old joke now, nor has the team confirmed the connection between the new game and South Park. Polygon asked Sunblink about the name of the game, and if it was inspired by South Park As we get more information, we’ll update this post.
