The Dark Souls tabletop RPG will be based on 5th edition D&D

Based on the bestselling book, a tabletop game of role-playing. Dark Souls Steamforged Games is working on a videogame. Dark Souls: The Roleplaying Game is an officially licensed product produced in partnership with FromSoftware and Bandai Namco, the game’s original developer and publisher respectively. It will be based on the open source version of 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons. No release date or additional information was made available, save for the brief teaser trailer that we’ve embedded above.

A sequel to the iconic action role-playing game Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls The game was first released in 2011, and it was available for Xbox 360 as well as PlayStation 3. FromSoftware received dozens of awards for their brutal mix of dungeon crawling, melee combat and twitch-based dungeon fighting. It has since spawned two excellent sequels of its own, and paved the way for a whole new genre known as “soulslikes.”

Previous tabletop RPG products from Steamforged have all been compatible with the 5th edition of Dungeons & Dragons. The Epic Encounters range is a collection of original, off-the shelves adventures that includes miniatures and dual-sided battlemats. It’s also responsible for the beginner-focused Animal Adventures RPG Starter Set, which is also compatible with 5e D&D.

In 2016, Steamforged Games broke into mainstream with an incredible $5.4 Million Kickstarter campaign. Dark Souls: The Board Game. The final game was not well received despite an impressive demo at Gen Con. That hasn’t stopped the British developer and publisher from pushing forward, leveraging co-founder Matt Hart’s experience in the video game industry to form new partnerships with popular franchises. Updated January 27, 2009: Steamforged has confirmed that they will be launching a new product on Thursday Dark Souls: The Roleplaying Game will be based on the 5th edition rules of Dungeons & Dragons. It also revealed the cover, which we’ve included below. Pre-orders are open now through February
