Asmodee Group, among the largest publishers and distributors of board games in the world, is once again up for sale with a reported price tag of €2.75 billion ($3.1 billion). Embracer Group has been selected as the buyer. Embracer Group already holds large amounts of capital in video games. In a press release, Wednesday’s announcement was made.
Asmodee is located in Paris and has been on an almost ten-year buying spree. Asmodee now controls many of the top board games publishers and studios through various acquisitions.Pandemic), Fantasy Flight Games (Legends of the Dark: DescentDays of Wonder (Get a Ticket for a Ride), and Catan Studio (Catan). It also houses multiple digital studios including Board Game Arena, which was recently acquired.
In “exclusive negotiations” to make the purchase, Embracer is a large conglomerate with eight previously existing business groups involved in producing video games. THQ Nordic (Darksiders), Deep Silver, Saints Row and Coffee Stain are some of its studios.Valheim), Saber Interactive (Space Marine 2Gearbox Entertainment, (Borderlands), and Gearbox Entertainment. A Thursday investor conference is planned to talk about the purchase. It appears that the transaction has reached its final stage.
“Asmodee’s CEO Stéphane Carville together with his management team would continue to lead the new operating group,” Embracer said in its news release. “Asmodee would continue to operate as before the transaction with no reorganization expected driven by the transaction.”
In 2018, Asmodee was purchased by PAI Partners for $1.4 million. The increase in value of $1.7 billion reflects not only the growth and value of Asmodee’s acquisitions over that time period, but the growing size and importance of tabletop gaming in the entertainment space. This performance is similar to that of Games Workshop (Hasbro’s largest competitor) who have experienced significant increases in their sales over the last few years.
