Legacy-style Jurassic World board game on the way, Polygon’s exclusive preview

Board games work best when they’re telling a story, and traditionally that story has always started over again each time you open the game box. Rob Daviau’s Risk LegacyThis was changed when the game launched in 2011. It added new rules and an evolving narrative over the course more than twelve playthroughs. His success led to the creation of a new type of board game, which has had many hits. Pandemic Legacy Season 1To the sterling dungeon crawler GloomhavenTo the charm, it is reusable Charterstone.

Over the past decade, legacy games that have been the most successful took popular board and genre games and added an interesting storyline. Prospero Hall Design Studio is looking at things in a different way. It’s next title, Jurassic World – The Legacy of Isla nublar, will be the first legacy-style board game ever based on a major motion picture — five major motion pictures, to be exact, as it spans the entire Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment film franchise. Developers have plenty of characters, memorable stories, and cute critters to work with.

What about the gameplay? Ever since September, when the announcement was made about this project, many fans have wondered how it would be.

After three sessions with a pre-production copy of the final game, I’m happy to say that Jurassic WorldIt’s more than a tie-in movie. It could become the cross-over success that makes the board game genre mainstream. Here’s how it works, plus details on where and when you’ll be able to pre-order a copy in March 2022.

Jurassic World – The Legacy of Isla nublarTwo to four players play the iconic roles from the movie in an attempt to recreate the key scenes. This objective-based gaming system uses an action economy. The board is moved around by players and they can take actions in whatever order they like. A few guests might be led to the safety of the nearby visitor centre while others run by, avoiding a carnivorous dinosaur on their way to collect a genetic sample form a nearby herbivorous group. The motion feels almost like playing a game of chess. House on the Hill betrayed. The island’s shape remains the same throughout a game. However, the terrain is constantly being altered by dinosaurs or other dangers.

You will be able to take over Dr. John Hammond (park creator), Dr. Henry Wu (biologist) and Robert Muldoon (big-game hunter), among other things. Those same early games will find you rescuing visitors, dealing with power outages, and locating animals scattered all over the park — essentially reliving the plot of Jurassic ParkTwo two-hour games plus a tutorial were included. On paper that might sound derivative, but a clever system of semi-random event cards makes it so that you’re never quite sure what to expect next. It’s the same sort of tension baked into the semi-random deck of cards in the game PandemicWith only five rounds to play and five cards, tension feels tighter and focused.

It’s a game that appeals to legacy-style fans and has all of the necessary features. The game features new rules and locations as well as new characters. Jurassic WorldYou can access them all from one dozen sealed envelopes. This keeps the gameplay current and allows for the progression of the film’s timeline. The action economy is fun, makes a good match for the subject matter, and feels well-balanced in relation to the game’s overall level of threat. Player characters can be upgraded between games or scarred by their injuries — not killed necessarily, but effectively damaged in a way that makes you less likely to want to play them in the future. The various minigames (which include tableau building and pattern matching among others) are easy to understand without becoming boring. They’re engaging, but not distracting.

It is an enjoyable, cooperative experience that flows at a steady pace.

It should be no surprise that this level of competency is so common. Prospero Hall is the same group behind publisher Ravensburger’s hit family-friendly strategy game series Disney Villainous And Horrified. In addition to becoming the in-house designers for Funko, Prospero Hall has recently turned a whole string of mainstream franchises like Fast & Furious, Back to the Future, Top Gun, and The Goonies — even the work of painter Bob Ross — into excellent little board games.

It is impossible. Jurassic World Do not pretend to be ignorant of legacy games or their complexities. In fact, Propero Hall’s level of mechanical competence extends well into the presentation of the game itself.

Each element Jurassic World – The Legacy of Isla nublarFeels like an antique from the 1950s. It all starts with the cover of the box, which, together with various instructions manuals within, mimics pulp fiction, the inspiration for Michael Crichton’s original. Jurassic Park novel. Along with the many markers on cardboard, the game board also matches this theme. The entire collection seems to be taken straight from the Disneyland fold-out map. Even the pack-in organizer — the cardboard thing that holds all the bits in place between games — has the same woven pattern you might find in car interiors or home furnishings more than 70 years ago.

Everything from the pedestal-mounted mini dinosaurs and card backs is meticulously thought out. It all feels cohesive, and it reinforces the throwback feel. But all those bits also serve a purpose, focusing players’ attention back to the island itself, which quickly becomes the centerpiece of the entire campaign experience.

Every player at the table takes a few minutes to rebuild an island before the next game. The first couple of games see players draw from basic add-ons such as roads and fences. Later on, they’ll spend communal research points to add even more permanent upgrades, including new genetically modified dinosaurs hidden inside sealed boxes. Regardless of your strategy, the map itself will quickly grow to represent your group’s unique experience with the island — and with its inhabitants.

Jurassic World – The Legacy of Isla nublarKickstarter allows you to order copies now until March 22, 2022. One copy will set you back $120. That’s a fair price for such a large box with seven pounds of gameplay. But, while I’m largely positive on the first quarter of the game, I still can’t be sure that it will keep its momentum from the first game to the last.

The day-long preview session featured three games. One of them was a tutorial. There are still nine more games and plenty of unanswered questions. What is the skill of Prospero Hall in transferring players between the films? Do any of the mysterious dinosaurs that are still in cardboard boxes break the game’s rules? Is the final, thrilling adventure worth 24 hours of gameplay? Are the infinitely replayable versions left after the campaign is over any more fun? The entire experience could be ruined if you fail to meet even one of these design challenges.

Of course, we won’t truly know if Jurassic World – The Legacy of Isla nublarThe board game will remain a classic until its final release. Ironically, that’s also the same time we’re likely to know if the Jurassic World franchise is a big enough draw to create more fans of modern board games.
