Baldur’s Gate 3 lets you attack in many ways — but throwing is the best

Baldur’s Gate 3 is full of possibility — not just in the characters you create, but also in the ways these characters can move through the world. Sure, they’ll have different weapon affinities or dialogue possibilities based on their class. Everyone can take a couple of basic actions, so they shouldn’t be overlooked. “Dash” is obviously great for movement distance, and “hide” is great for surprise attacks — but I urge everyone not to sleep on “throw,” one of Baldur’s Gate 3’s greatest joys.

Throw is a game that has endless possibilities. For healing, you can smash bottles next to members of your group. Throwing a carafe will freeze water and make enemies fall down. You can also throw a jar of grease to set on fire. It’s incredibly entertaining to throw random things. I’ve also made it an effective battle tactic thanks to a Ring of Flinging, which gives me an extra 1d4 roll. Why bother managing my inventory when you can simply throw something at someone?

Here’s an incomplete list of all of the objectively perfect things I’ve been able to do, thanks to my use of throw:

• Throwing a tomato rotten at the enemy, you killed him.
• Healed Astarion with a potion by having him step over the potion.
• The child was picked up and then thrown
• Wild transformed my druid to a cat and then had Astarion throw it through the prison bars.
• Bottles of grease were thrown in the direction of a grouping of gnolls. Then, they were set ablaze
• Looted enemies, took their weapons — and then threw those weapons at their allies
• Scratch and fetch was played at camp

Some great advice for you from your friends and colleagues

• You can cast mage hands and throw potions with it, or do any of these things that you are able to.
• If you’re strong enough (enraged Barbarian, anyone?You can pick up and throw enemies into lava or a steep cliff if you’re strong enough (enraged Barbarian, anyone?
• Use random items around you like shoes or chairs — or even, uh, someone’s decapitated head — as weapons, in a pinch
• Throw teammates onto ledges they can’t reach on their own

I’m sure there are numerous other beautiful possibilities that none of us have even dreamed of yet. I’m still only in the first act, and I cannot wait for the dumb shit I attempt in the next ones.
