Discord is about to make you pick a new, unique username

It has changed the format of usernames, by removing the last four numbers from each one. This change was announced by the chat platform via an official post in its blog on May 3rd. The announcement says the change will debut “over the coming weeks.”

Discord currently allows its users to choose any name they want, and then cap it with a four-digit random code. This allows thousands of users to choose MasterChiefFan420, without any conflict. Users can also choose to customize their code via Discord Nitro, the platform’s subscription service. Every user is now required to choose a brand new unique username. “New usernames are lowercase, alphanumeric, limited to certain special characters, and do not have discriminators, making them easier to remember, read, type, and share,” reads the blog post.

The maximum length of a username is 32 characters. There are also restrictions on how the name can be used. A handle, for example, cannot imitate Discord staff or server messages or other people, groups or organizations. It’s unclear how Discord intends to enforce this policy or confirm user identities, especially given the way verification-related fiascos have been playing out on Twitter.

Users can still use their display names, but they will need to choose a handle that is unique. As Discord explains it, “[A display name] is your most prominent form of identity on Discord, and it is how other users will see you in DMs where a friend nickname is not set, in servers where a server nickname is not set, and in other places like friend requests.”

Users will be able to choose a username and display name unique to them, as well as server-specific handles if desired. If you use Discord, you’ll be notified in the app when you are eligible to pick your new username and set a display name. Older accounts will see the change first. Veteran users of Discord can choose a brand new username.
