Minecraft Legends Review – A Strategic Retreat

Mojang Studios is back at the table to try and take Minecraft into a new, bold direction. Minecraft Legends offers an open world real-time strategic game that lets you collect resources, create defenses and even summon cute mercenaries in order to defend the sacred realm. Legends takes a different approach to strategy games. Instead of focusing on the bird’s-eye view that is so common, it focuses more on the character. Your hero will roam the land with a sword, riding dynamic mounts. He or she must use resources to defeat evil Piglin factions with their own combat quirks. The concept is intriguing, but the unique way it takes on a classic franchise often feels at odds with its own spirit. Minecraft Legends feels caught between the expected complexity of strategy games and the franchise’s approachable brand.

It was like a first date that went badly. As I galloped around the gorgeous environments, I was constantly interrupted by the game’s advisors trying to shoehorn me into specific tasks, which took away some of the shine from Legends’ immediately intriguing world. After a long tutorial and repeated gameplay, Legends lets you go. This is when the real fun starts.

Legends’ reasonably sized map is full of iconic Minecraft imagery. Overworlds are organically designed, from wolves sauntering through the grasslands to turtles splashing about in ponds. Bouncecaps, an ambient patch of terrain with the same name, encouraged me to consider exploration from a vertical perspective as it sent my hero into the skies. The idea of testing the limit of falling damage to find untouched areas was appealing. I found some surprises and even some slapstick.

Across the realm, you’ll take down Piglin strongholds with combinations of deadly mobs and defend helpless villages by building walls and towers, all while maintaining your captured bases from random raids. Various defensive and offensive scenarios pushed me to evolve my tactics and choose my upgrades wisely at the Well of Fate, the hero’s home base. You are forced to decide between adding more mobs, having additional structures or resources.

Legends has given the traditional Minecraft mobs a new look. Creepers may have once sent shivers down the spine but now they look like cute puppies, with a temper that can be used at will. This twist also applies to Zombies and Skeletons: earn their trust by defending their homes from Piglin attacks; they’ll aid you against the tyrannical enemies who have usurped their position as the conventional menaces of the domain.

Minecraft Legends engages players by hiding tools and mobs throughout the procedural world. The perspective changes can make it difficult for you to feel like you are part of the story. It was the Allays that did all of the upgrading, gathered the resources and built the structures. My hero stayed on the ground and manually called in troops to fight the enemies. It’s tempting to want to play in an interactive world.

It also affected my battles. Instead of being a commander who is storming castles, I felt like an outsider, watching as my army destroyed structures and wandered the outer edges by myself. Minecraft Legends’ most absorbing moments come when you fight side by side with your mobs to destroy a Piglin portal, so it feels particularly deflating when the game forces you to replenish yourself outside of the action as your troops continue without you. These maverick system do have some benefits, however, because Legends is able to twist strategy games in a manner that attracts new players.

Minecraft Legends is a game that combines open-world adventure and real-time strategic gameplay. This can be a battle which takes away some of the enjoyment you could have. Yet, the beautiful environments and creative world-building encourage a familiar level of creativity. Where other strategy games feature more profound complexity, Minecraft Legends has heart, and it’s hard to resist its charm. Mojang’s first expedition into this genre occasionally holds your hand too tight. But when its grip loosens, there’s a vibrant world of combat challenges to discover, ultimately making it an enticing endeavor.
