Below is our review

As with other movies from the Mean-Girls High School subgenre Get Revenge The film focuses heavily on the complexities of social plots and the viciousness of popular cliques. But it isn’t derivative or a cliche: Instead, it’s a natural evolution of this type of movie for 2022. Some parts of high school are constants, but youth culture rapidly evolves, so teen movies — especially ones adapting or paying homage to older material — risk feeling outdated. Get RevengeBecause Celeste Ballard, Robinson’s co-writer, cleverly updated certain plot points to avoid the curse, it is possible to escape this curse.

Based on A. S. Byatt’s 1994 book The Djinn in the Nightingale’s Eye, George Miller’s Three Thousand years of longingThe story centers around Dr. Alithea Binnie, a historian of myths who uncorks an Idris Elba (Tilda Swainton) from the bottle in which he’s been held for over 100 years. The Djinn, bound to Alithea, tells three stories about his three thousand year imprisonment. Each story is a tale that tells of love, loss, betrayal and longing.

Our review:

There are films that change the nature of the air you breathe after you watch them, as a motif from its score loops in one’s mind and the color of the world outside the theater doesn’t quite live up to what was seen on screen. Three Thousand years of longing is one of those films, a story about stories — a fraught genre prone to self-importance — that isn’t solely interested in their magic as a cloying, unifying force. They’re more than that. This is even more terrifying. This is a satisfying way to discover this. It’s not possible to find a more rewarding and enjoyable way than to watch two people, who think they are the best at stories, try to predict how it will end.

Vengeance

B.J. Novak holds a phone out to record Boyd Holbrook’s voice in Vengeance

B.J. Novak directs his first feature film, playing the role of a New York-based journalist that travels to Texas in search of a missing person.

This is our review

The movie periodically reminds the audience that yes, guns and fast food are a major part of the Texas crowd’s American life. The fact that Ben himself is self-conscious about his possible East Coast condescension adds another layer — and so does the fact that he engages in it anyway. But those extra layers don’t necessarily enrich the experience of watching the movie. Eventually, Vengeance starts to feel a bit like a distended meme, tracking the gifted-kid-to-compromised-murder-investigator pipeline.

Breaking

Good night Mommy

Naomi Watts wears a ski mask and looks in the mirror in Goodnight Mommy.

Naomi Watts stars in the 2022 American remake of Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala’s 2014 psychological horror film Good night Mommy. The film centers on twin boys who, after arriving at their mother’s secluded country home to discover her face covered in bandages, grow to suspect that this woman is not in fact their mother.

Our review:

When was the English-language remake announced? Goodnight MamaIt was unclear whether the remake would have the same effect and finish as the original. Not only does the remake lack the gumption to even approach the original film in terms of terror and on-screen pain, it doesn’t really work as a film in its own right.

Naomi Watts plays the title Mommy in this new film. English-language remakes The Ring Funny GamesWatts has a lot of experience and may seem like an obvious choice to lead yet another American remake of an international horror movie. The remake’s shortcomings aren’t due to her lack of craft or effort — the issues lie solely in the writing and directing.

Hiroyasu Ishida’s (Penguin HighwayThe latest animation feature The Drifting House centers on childhood friends Kosuke and Natsume who, after visiting the apartment building where they used to live before it’s demolished, are transported to another dimension surrounded by a vast ocean. They are left alone with their friends and have to work together in order to get out of the strange new world.

Our review:

Studio Colorido has produced a charming animation (Penguin Highway, One Whisker awayThis is a great way to promote the bizarre idea. Although the action centers around a structure floating in the water like a boat, it shifts and breaks easily. Similar effects are achieved by the gentle and subtle drawings of young characters. Akihiro Nagae’s designs remain down-to-earth even with the more fantastical figures that appear to the children. The photorealistic background art contrasts modernity with midcentury, postwar architecture, but Ishida’s direction doesn’t obsess over realism. It never feels at odds with the film’s sense of peril when the director inflects broad, sometimes elastic physical comedy on the characters’ interactions with these environments, like when Kosuke daringly uses a makeshift zipwire to reach an adjacent floating building, crashes through the corrugated iron roof, and bounces off the building like a pinball.

Fletch or Confess

Jon Hamm is the star of this revival of the 1980s comedy show, replacing Chevy Chase who plays the fast-witted comedian detective.

Our review:

The way Hamm’s revival of the series is receiving a halfhearted dual release in some theaters and on VOD suggests how little faith Miramax has in the project. But the film says something different. It’s fleet and amusing — the kind of comedy grown-up moviegoers used to see a lot more regularly than they do today. Comedies have fallen out of favor in a cinematic landscape that’s more devoted to Liam Neeson-style revenge movies, but Fletch or ConfessIt is not only refreshing for its use of comedy but also for the way it uses Jon Hamm.
