Talking with the Creative Force Behind the Upcoming Gungrave G.O.R.E.

As Gungrave G.O.R.E approaches its release later this year, I had a chance to chat with Mr. Yasuhiro Nightow, the legendary mangaka artist and the creative force behind the cult anti-hero, Grave, to answer some of my burning questions about this upcoming stylish third-person shooter on how he started drawing, how he sees Grave fit in with today’s other heroes, and who would win in a fight between Grave and Deadpool.

How did you start to draw and write?

The earliest memory I have is from when I was about kindergarten. I already had a comic featuring Snoopy in the lead character. Because I loved drawing, I did it back then.

What is Grave?

His character is one that can destroy all things in its path. He has a coffin with two guns, which are meant to relieve stress for everyone.

What was the original inspiration for Grave?

My first step was to imagine the game screen. His back was already facing us at that time, so I started designing his back.

Is it exciting to see a new generation of gamers eagerly awaiting the next game? Gungrave G.O.R.E.?

Studio Iggymob has a wonderful surprise for us all. This project is my sincere wish.

Is there a Grave Weapon you love?

It’s the rocket launcher he puts on his shoulder that’s fired with the classic and elegant desperado pose.

How do you think Grave fits in with today’s other anti-heroes and super beings?

It will fit perfectly for me, I believe. Marvel VS Capcom series. Even though it’s not Marvel or Capcom. You would think it was Marvel. Mortal KombatHe is about to be broken into pieces in horrible ways. It is heartbreaking for us as parents (laughter).

Which would be the winner in a battle between Grave or Deadpool?

Grave takes on Deadpool with calm and determination. After tens or thousands of fights, Deadpool will win, despite his inability to fully recover. The most important thing is that Deadpool won’t get tired of fighting nine times out of ten.
