Frogs and Mechs Team up in Sci-Fi Roguelike Shoulders of Giants – Coming to Xbox

I’m sure you’ve all heard the myths and legends of the age-old rivalry between frogs and mechs. However, we’ve long held the suspicion that these stories are nothing but spurious hearsay, and that, given a chance, amphibians and robots might just make the best teammates. We set out to create a game that would prove this! This game is called Giants Shoulders, a piggybackin’ sci-fi roguelike in which players simultaneously control a sword-wielding robot and a gunslinging space frog, working in tandem to save the galaxy!

We can now finally confirm that Giants ShouldersXbox is getting it! (New trailer above!) and tell you a bit more about the roguelike gameplay with a mix of close quarters and ranged combat, all the crazy fun weapons we are working on, and different coop modes (hint: in one of them two players share the controls of one playable character – very stupid, very fun!).

The story is the first thing! Entropy is causing chaos in the stars and corrupting the living planets, resulting in the death of all life. One scrappy group of survivors from space are working together to bring back the equilibrium, led by a psychic Owl. Mysterious mech! An amphibian that can shoot! They must team up to take down enemies, and bring back light and life in the galaxy.

Gameplay-wise, Giants Shoulders is basically the game we always wanted to play but couldn’t find anywhere else. It’s all about quick bursts of roguelike joy, as you explore, grow, and become gloriously overpowered on a never-ending ride of randomized levels.

Combat is close-quarters fighting with melee weapons such as laser swords or crazy hammers and long range combat using pistols, rifles, and other firearms. You can always find loot that will improve your skills or change your loadout to keep it fresh. Some of these upgrades include grappling hooks and speed bursts as well as glowing grenades and a futuristic trash vehicle you can summon and use to ride like a surfboard over your enemies. There are also big magical laser hands that can clap them into unconsciousness. Every new pickup will change your playstyle and power. Mix and match abilities to create a moveset that’s all your own!

Of course, we couldn’t make a game about best friends on a wild adventure to take down the forces of evil without adding co-op, right? You can still fully enjoy the game. Giants ShouldersSolo we made the decision early to add different co-op modes into the game. A single mode allows you to play the game with four people online. Personally, I think there’s nothing more fun than battling through levels, squabbling over loot and then coming together to tackle massive bosses with some of your buddies!

There’s also another co-op mode that we are super proud of: In  “Best Friend Mode” you team up with a friend, each taking control of either the frog or the robot. This effectively means that you share the control of the same player character. It can make for some very funny encounters and a great co-op challenge. In our internal playtests the “Best Friend Mode” regularly gets us cry laughing, but it’s also a true test of friendship in the tougher encounters.
