PSA: You Can No Longer Use Credit Cards To Add 3DS And Wii U eshop Funds On Monday

Nintendo revealed in February it would discontinue 3DS and Wii U eshop purchase in March 2023. But, this sunsetting process slowly rolls out through 2022. The lights begin turning off on Monday, May 23 when players lose the ability to add eshop funds using credit cards.

If you’ve turned on your 3DS or Wii U recently, you likely received a notification reminding you that your stored credit cards will soon become useless. You’ll still be able to add money using Nintendo eshop cards – that option won’t disappear until August 29. This weekend, however, is the last opportunity to enjoy the ease of shopping online with your cards.

Be aware that players cannot link their Nintendo Network ID wallet with their Nintendo Account wallet once their credit and eshop cards are gone. This wallet is used to purchase Switch games, but not for 3DS/Wii U store purchases. You can use the combined balances of all wallets to buy software across all platforms. This will only be a way to buy 3DS/Wii U software until March. The remaining funds can be used for Switch purchases only after that.

You can still play 3DS/Wii U online games and download DLC and updates. Nintendo states this will remain the case for “the foreseeable future.”
