Xbox Series X/S Was Best-Selling Console In Dollar Sales In US Last Month And Overall First Quarter

Microsoft’s March 2022 month was a success. The Xbox Series X/S platform was the most-sold hardware product in America last month, in dollar terms. The Xbox Series X/S was the most-sold console by dollar in the first quarter of this year. 

The following news is from The NPD Group’s Mat PiscatellaIn his regular monthly NPD numbers round-up. The gold medal for dollar sales went to Xbox Series X/S, but the Switch was the best-selling console in March 2022. Xbox’s great March sales led to March 2022 being an all-time high March record for the hardware platform. NPD reported that the previous Xbox records for March (in terms unit sales) were broken in March 2011, and March 2014. (In terms of dollars sales), 

In March 2022, overall hardware dollar sales declined 24% compared to March 20,21. Total, $515 million was lost. The first quarter’s sales were $1.2 billion. This is a 15% decrease compared with the 2021 quarter. The overall decrease in hardware sales caused a decline in videogame spending for March 2022. 

“March 2022 spending across video game hardware, content, and accessories declined 15% vs YA, to $4.9 billion,” Piscatella writes on Twitter. “Declines were seen across all major categories of spend. First quarter 2022 spending fell 8% vs Q1 2021, to $13.9 billion.”

On the software side of things, despite big new tentpole releases like Gran Turismo 7, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, and more, Elden Ring came out on top. Taking the throne of best-selling game of March 2022 after being the best-selling game in February too, Elden Ring experienced “double-digit percentage dollar sales growth compared to its Feb 2022 launch,” The NPD Group says. Elden Ring was the first to sell dollars on PlayStation, Xbox and PC platforms. 

Gran Turismo 7 was released near the end of March. It was second on the PlayStation platform in terms of sales and second only to Elden Ring. According to NPD, the launch of Gran Turismo 7 set an all-time record in terms of launch month sales for this franchise.
