Updated: MLB The Show 22 – Review In Progress (Now With Switch Impressions)
The MLB lockout continued for weeks, putting spring’s annual crack in the bat at risk. The league and players eventually reached an agreement. Although the season will not be completed, it was slightly delayed. The first pitch will be thrown in April 7, which is exactly one week as of the time this article was written. The MLB The Show Series is usually released a week before the MLB season starts. However, this year’s edition hits stores just two days prior to the MLB season begins on April 5. It will be available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Xbox Series X/S. The first Switch version of MLB The Show was also made available on April 5.
The PlayStation 5 Xbox Series X and Switch editions have just arrived. This story will continue to be updated throughout the day. Sony says that fielding, hitting and pitching have all been enhanced. The audio commentary comes from a new team. You can also participate in an online cooperative game and expect to see improvement in the main avenues of the series, like Franchise, Road to the Show, Diamond Dynasty, and Road to the Show.
Here are my first impressions of the PlayStation 5 version. First, a video. Shohei Ohtani gives more details about his career in baseball. Then, it was time to fReturning players or new players will receive rewards for returning for another season. These are the rewards I got:

After selecting your team, the main menu will open. Next, you can choose to go into a practice match to see which style of play suits you best. To get back to basics and determine which pitching or batting system you like, I suggest this step.
On the main menu is an option to have online co-op. This allows players to choose between 2v2 and 3v3. I will use this mode as my first play opportunity. Below is a trailer that demonstrates what the mode offers.
Five missions are required to enter Diamond Dynasty. You will be assigned a default team to use, as always. Here’s mine:

You will be facing the New York Yankees at the bottom of the 9th. The runners are on first and third. My case was different. I sent the first pitch to the right field wall and won the game. As a reward, I was given two cards: Vinny Castilla (72), and Vinny Casilla (72).
Preorders get four days of play time, so I was able to find a partner for my first game together. Our lineup was vastly different. Both players choose a couple of cards to use in the game before it starts. Fernado Tatis Jr. and Rickey Lashley, Joe Mauer were among the cards that our opponents had to open. Giancarlo Stanton is another jaw-dropping member of their roster.
Matchmaking works quickly. It put me in a team with my friend and I had to search for opponents. In a two-on-two game you and your partner alternate playing bats. When someone scores, the baserunner becomes the player who is not at bat. One player is responsible for fielding. This player also controls pitcher and catch for the entire innings. Other players field. To activate the bullpen, any player may enter the Pause menu. If you are fielding, your view is behind the pitcher until the ball is put in play – allowing for you to get a good look at the pitch locations (you just don’t see your teammate’s meters).
Although there was some latency, it was generally smooth. While we managed 12 hits, they had five. However, two of those five runs were home runs. In our nine-inning match, we left the bases empty twice. A groundball hit in the middle of a shift ended one scoring opportunity. It was scored 2-0. It was a hard fought battle but the final score was 2-0.
Although the gameplay was smooth and enjoyable, I couldn’t find much visually that had changed from last year. It’s still an amazing game. Each field animation was perfect. The player speeds on both the base paths as well as in the field were all right. And the pitching/batting fight was just as thrilling. You can check the PCI of your fellow teammate and see how close they are to winning one.
Above is the video that I took of one pack I opened. While I have no 90-plus players yet, I’m only 4,500 shy of opening a Big Dog pack. This gives me one Diamond player which is rare 90 overall, and base 85-plus. The card designs for this year are great, particularly those that tie to the Faces of the Franchise program. It ends in just 28 days. Faces of the Franchise features daily moments, Flashback missions and Legends, as well as final boss battles. This battle pass-like path also allows you to earn XP from regular games, collections and trades.
You will receive a Babe Ruth card upon completion of the only program that was available at launch. You will be required to play one game in a mini-season, as well as tally basic baseball accomplishments such five hits.
Although the menus and play avenues for Diamond Dynasty are a little confusing at first, they offer many exciting ways to win rewards and to spend a lot of time.
One glance at some rosters revealed that they were all up to date. Carlos Marcus Stroman wears his Cubs pinstripes while Correa is playing with the Minnesota Twins. In order to be promoted from the minors, or signed out of the league like Seiya Sugimoto, rookies must play at least five innings. Keep this in mind as you wait for the MLB season to start Franchise mode and any other roster-based activity. Diamond Dynasty offers the most viable option.

Now for the bad news. MLB The Show 22 on Switch is a complete mess. These impressions were made on an OLED Switch in handheld mode. All of the content was the same as on the PlayStation and Xbox versions. However, the playability is poor due to a slow framerate and noticeable visual flickering. The strobe light effects on the texture of the fence make it difficult to focus when the ball is in play. Thankfully, the batting and pitching is not affected by significant framerate drops – meaning it plays well – but the pitcher animation almost looks digitized. Framerate drops are most evident in broadcast moments like zooming in on the pitcher following an out.
At the time of writing, there is no patch available for download. I do not know if any are currently available. However, it will be noted that I am unable to connect to the server. Only offline modes such as franchise, road to the show, or exhibition are available.
While I plan to play the Switch version more in the future, I am returning to PlayStation 5 to investigate Diamond Dynasty, Franchise and Road to the Show. The difference in weight between the game and last year is something I am starting to notice. Although it’s difficult to know how this affects play in real life, the feeling of getting weaker wood on a ball is a different one.
Day 5
Diamond Dynasty has always had a great three-inning game format. The new Mini Seasons mode offers great competition against CPU-controlled opponents and good rewards. My first season is 21 games in, but I am only a few games over.500. If the season ends here, however, I would be making the playoff with four other teams. A Diamond Championship Bundle and an Evan Longoria Card (89) will be given to me if I win the championship.
These games have some very impressive fielding animations, which factor in player momentum. Although CPU opponents can make flawless plays on All-Star difficulty, I’m seeing more bobbles for players with lower fielding ratings. The play feels balanced overall. I can see the correct outcomes in swing timing, as well as the angle at which I touch the ball. It seems that the ball has more weight, making it easier to read grounders and allowing for more precise trajectories from the wall. Last year was excellent in fielding, with this year’s edition being just as good, although perhaps slightly better thanks to the addition of animations by Sony.
The rewards of card collecting are also great. You get a steady flow of cards to complete missions. You can complete many tasks in each Diamond Dynasty game mode, and some of them are quick enough to be done in a matter of minutes.
Road to the Show is still not my favorite, although I did play with franchise mode. I am not seeing anything new here, other than the enhanced trade logic and option, and it is not something that has been very appealing to me for the past few installments.
The servers should be stable enough that I can enjoy more multiplayer on day 6. Conquet will be my next stop.
