New PS5 Update Live, PlayStation Says Variable Refresh Rate Support Is Coming
Editor’s NoteVideo Games Chronicle reports that users cannot play online games after installing the new PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 updates. This should be noted before updating. However, if you’ve already downloaded the update, it’s hard to imagine that PlayStation doesn’t get this fixed as soon as possible.
The PS5 has received a new update. It includes UI improvements for Game Base, Trophy Cards and other enhancements.
Sony has revealed in a PlayStation Blog post that the updated will include Variable refresh rate support. Although this feature will not be offered to all players who are using compatible TVs and monitors on their PCs, once the update is available, the PS5 will now have the ability to transfer video frames as quickly as it can to other displays, with the screen automatically adapting to any source. This means that you will have a more smooth gaming experience, with less tearing, especially when using high frame rates.

“On HDMI 2.1-compatible TVs and PC monitors, VRR dynamically syncs the refresh rate of the display to the PS5 console’s graphical output,” PlayStation writes in the blog post. “This enhances visual performance for PS5 games by minimizing or eliminating visual artifacts, such as frame pacing issues and screen tearing. PS5 titles have smoother gameplay because scenes are rendered instantly and graphics appear crisper. Input lag has also been reduced. Previously released PS5 games can be fully optimized for VRR through a game patch and future games may include VRR support at launch.”
While you wait, however, the PS5 update improves other features on the console.
“Thanks to support from our beta participants, we’re introducing some fan-requested features to our global community today, like the ability to create or join Open and Closed Parties on PS5 and PS4 console,” the blog post reads. “On PS5, we’re also bringing UI enhancements to Game Base and Trophy cards, as well as accessibility features like mono audio and headphones.”
As in the beta version, U.S. users will have the opportunity to test out the Voice Command Preview feature. This allows them search and open apps, games and other applications with just their voice.
Elsewhere in the update, you can create and join Open and Closed parties through the PS App, and there’s a new “dark mode’ now available in the app as well.
