Persona sister series Soul Hackers is getting a sequel in August

While the world waits for more news of what Atlus has planned for Persona’s 25th anniversary, the publisher has instead announced Soul Hackers 2A game called?, It is not Persona 6Still pretty cool.

This is an unexpected delight in itself. Soul Hackers 2 is a sequel to 1997’s Devil Summoner: Soul HackersThis is one of the less well-known Shin Megami Tensei splinoffs. Originally released for the Sega Saturn in Japan, the game merged the demon recruiting of its parent series with a ‘90s cyberpunk story about Paradigm X, a Matrix-like digital world that was covertly used to steal the souls of users.

This sequel builds on the technology-fueled occult -Matrix concept of the original. A team of Devil Summoners works together to prevent an apocalypse that spans the digital and real worlds. They use the power demons to their advantage. This will, like most Shin Megami Tensei spinoffs and involve dungeon crawling as well as collecting demons. It may also bring back memories for Sega Saturn JRPG fans.

PSA to those who want to play the first game in English: This is the only English language release Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers came via an enhanced 3DS port that you can still purchase from the Nintendo eShop — but only before it closes next year.

Soul Hackers 2It will be available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Xbox One starting August 26, 2022.
