12 questions after Dragon Prince season 4’s big ending
Two years later, the characters of The Dragon PrinceOnce again, they are running through the magical realm of Xadia. And once again, they’re split into two factions, albeit with alignment shuffles and new characters brought into the fold. Claudia the dark mage has finally revived her father Viren. However, in order for him to be permanent she must also free Aaravos the Startouch Elf. Viren, Claudia and Terry, her boyfriend, have much work ahead.
On the other end of the court, young King Ezran, his half-brother Callum, Moonshadow elf assassin Rayla, and Claudia’s brother, the new kingsguard Soren, set out to StopClaudia from rescuing Aaravos. In the first season, these two factions sought out the Archdragon of Earth, who held a critical piece of information about Aaravos’ whereabouts. As the season’s subtitle implies, there are a LotsThere are many mysteries about this man.
And we’ve barely scratched their surfaces, even after a confrontation with the great Earth dragon in the finale. Even with all our questions answered about Aaravos there is still much to learn in season 5. Let’s dig in, and spin a few theories, too.

What is the secret of Aaravos’s mystery?
Zubeia, Archdragon to the Sky tells them that Aaravos was in prison centuries ago because he manipulated mages into political strife. A number of killings and assassinations were committed by him. The crime was obvious, but nobody knows the truth. WhyThis is what he did. Is he simply enjoying chaos? Are there greater plans at work? He is incredibly old, and one of the first people to inhabit Xadia. He calls himself the “last of the Great Ones,” though we don’t know anything about what the Great Ones are.
The mysterious prison is where?
Aaravos is in prison at a place unknown even to the dragons, elves and other elves. Most likely, the characters will race across Xadia for the prison. Who will be the first to reach it? Terry, Viren, Claudia and Viren are all determined to release Aaravos fully. Callum and Rayla Soren, Ezran, or Rayla Soren, Soren, & Terry, who wish to prevent them from being freed? Considering Team Claudia has the map to the prison, they’re currently in the lead.
Claudia Is Claudia a permanent evil person?
This season kicked off with Claudia finally resurrecting her dead father, Viren — and then embarking on a quest to free Aaravos so that she can complete the resurrection. Considering she seems pretty hellbent on her mission, even after learning that Aaravos is Not Good News, it’s likely that she’ll remain an antagonist for at least the bulk of the next few seasons. It’s possible that she might have an epiphany. Certainly the fact that she listened to her boyfriend Terry when he called her out for being needlessly cruel to Rayla indicates that there’s still Some good in her.
Callum uses primal magic.

As of the show’s fourth season, Callum is still the only human who can use primal magic. This is an overview: Primal magic can only be used by elves. Dark magic requires humans to drain their life force. We still don’t know exactly why he can use it when other humans can’t — does he have an elf father? Can other humans use it but they just haven’t tried?
Will we ever see Runaan again?
Probably! We’ve long known that Rayla’s guardian, the broody Runaan, was not ActuallyStill alive, but locked up in a coin. It turns out that her parents also live in the same coin prisons. Claudia taunts Rayla at the end with coins. While Rayla initially holds them back, Rayla eventually gives them away to Claudia. Now Rayla has her guardian’s and her parents’ souls (????) In easy-to-carry format! They might be freed in the following seasons.
Was Rayla working during these two years?

Rayla began her hunt for Viren, Claudia and Callum after she left Katolis with her BF Callum. She was a skilled assassin but failed to succeed despite being an expert. We don’t know what exactly she got up to in that time except that (1) she was too busy to write a letter and (2) she adopted a cute monkey creature. Hopefully the next few seasons will dive into some of Rayla’s adventures during this time.
Callum and Rayla to reunite?
Is it considered broken up even though they have never actually split up? There’s clearly still some tension between these two, even if they have yet to sit down and have a proper conversation about it all. Still, they have chemistry and history, so it’s only a matter of time before they repair their bonds. We’re pretty damn certain that Rayllum will share a smooch or two by the time the sixth season comes around.
Is Sir Sparklepuff really real?
Image: Wonderstorm, Bardel Entertainment/Netflix
Ah, yes. So, the little worm thing that Aaravos used to whisper cryptic messages to Viren in the first three seasons spun itself into a giant cocoon… and then from that chrysalis emerged a strange humanoid-bug hybrid creature. It was named Sir Sparklepuff by Claudia. Although we don’t know what the hell it is, it seems to have been connected to Aaravos somehow. He can however no longer use it directly to Viren, Claudia, or to talk to Viren. Instead, Sir Sparklepuff speaks via basic pantomime.
Are Viren capable of appointing?
Viren’s final shot is of him with his glowing purple eyes, which fade to black as shadowy lines spread across his face. Callum had similar black eyes when Aaravos took possession of him earlier in this season. It should also be mentioned that this is the way he appears when he does dark magic. Are Aaravos and Viren just trying to find a more direct way of puppeting Viren, or are they simply trying to revive his interest in dark magic? The fact that it is the last thing we see this season hints that it might be more important…
It is Callum possessed?
Callum still feels scarred from the event, even after Aaravos seemed to have released Callum. Rayla even offers to kill Callum if Aaravos takes control. Callum gets taunted by Aaravos, who claims that Callum will play into his hands. Seems likely that this is not the last we’ve seen of Possessed Callum.
Janai to choose Amaya over her people
Image: Wonderstorm, Bardel Entertainment/Netflix
Janai, Sunfire Elf queen struggles to be a leader for her people while also wanting to marry Amaya the fearsome human warrior. You may recall that Janai only stepped up to take the throne after the death of her sister, and she didn’t even want to be queen. Janai hopes to guide her people in a new era. However, Amaya’s brother and many other political leaders think she is abandoning the traditions. As Janai says when confiding in Amaya, she knows she can’t “have her cake and eat it too.” To which Amaya replies, “Just have two cakes!”
While Janai successfully quashes her brother’s attempts to stage a coup, the future of the Sunfire elves — and her own relationship — remains up in the air.
IS THERE HARROW IN THE ?!?!?!?!?!??
After the premiere season, this is one of the most talked about theories. The Dragon Prince was that King Harrow’s soul was trapped in his pet bird. We have not seen the bird in quite some time (not even in the end credit illustrations), and considering that every time Harrow is mentioned, none of the characters even acknowledge the possibility he could be alive… Harrow is probably dead-dead. Sorry!
