Nintendo Switch Crosses 103 Million Units Sold, Surpasses Wii’s Lifetime Sales
Following a record-breaking 103 million sales, Nintendo now has the Switch as its third most popular console.
More specifically, in Nintendo’s latest round of quarterly results, the company revealed that 103.54 million Switch consoles have been sold. It has now sold more units than the Wii (101.63 million) in its entire lifetime. The Switch had sold 92 million units before these numbers. It was behind Game Boy (118.69 millions) and Nintendo DS (154.02million).
Nintendo’s president also revealed that the Switch is only in the middle of its lifecycle, suggesting it might be on its way to passing the Game Boy at least. The DS’ massive 154 million seems like more of a stretch but that doesn’t mean it’s not possible.
It seems that the chip shortages will make 2022 a more challenging year for Nintendo when it comes selling its consoles. Nintendo disclosed in November it had cut its Switch forecasts by 20%. It had originally planned to ship 30,000,000 units in March, but the 20% decrease brought down its target to 24 million. According to Nintendo, the new quarterly results show that Nintendo has reduced its target further. Bloomberg.
Nintendo now plans to sell 23,000,000 Switch units. This is 1 million less than its original 24 million goal.
Regardless, the Switch’s latest sales numbers are nothing to scoff at. According to a Switch sales report, it sold 100 million more units in its lifetime than any other console. Bloomberg. The Switch’s output of first-party software helped make that happen. The company released its lifetime sales for many of its first-party games and we’ve listed them below:
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: 43.35 millions
