Yule Log videos are a popular holiday trend and an offshoot from streaming culture. They’re easier to assemble than an actual fire, they’re more practical for apartment-dwellers or people living in warm climates, and they don’t require any clean-up. It’s quick and easy to order one online. They add warmth and excitement to holiday festivities. But since they’re also easy to make and distribute, suddenly every streaming platform has its own fireplace videos.

Every entertainment franchise seems to be the same. There are TwoOfficial Frozen Yule Logs. A few Marvel versions are also available. Hearthstone Minecraft, OutlanderPlease see the following: Shrek. Slapping a franchise name and theme on a fireplace video is all fun and games for big entertainment corporations, until you pause for a moment and consider: “Wait, does this mean this Yule Log is canon?!”

It can be used with the Canon Yes. Yes. Bright, which is the “cinematic embodiment of a busted, spewing sewage pipe.”

DC Yule Log

It is how long? 10 hours.

What are your Christmas cheer levels? The whole scene is festive and decorated, with stockings o’er the hearth, a tree in the corner, and a menorah on the table to be inclusive.

It can be used with canon The stockings include ones for Clark, Bruce, Dick, and Jason. A trident rests on the fireplace and in lieu of tinsel, it appears to be Wonder Woman’s lasso adorning the hearth. Does it count as canon? It is hard to imagine why a fireplace would reveal a lot of secret identities. But it is adorable.

Log Deadpool Yule

It is how long? Only five minutes.

What are your Christmas cheer levels?This is the literal fire-up of a paper bag. However, it’s placed upon a festively decorated doorstep. The crude Deadpool illustration on the bag does include a Santa hat.

It can be used with the Canon Sure. Deadpool. Funny.

The Festive Thirteenth Doctor Yule Log

It is how long?While the first takes just a little more than two hours, it is nearly exactly two.

What are your Christmas cheer levels? In the background is a Christmas fireplace with stockings and garland. Tardis’s snow globe is the centerpiece, with its little wreath. The show’s original orchestral music is also featured in this one. It’s not explicitly Christmas-y, but instead feels very Doctor Who Tone.

This second fireplace is fully decorated with lights and stockings. Stringed lights are visible above and we can see a platter of cookies when the camera pans. It’s a British video. It’s so cute! But it’s notable that there seem to be falling leaves outside the window, not falling snow.

It can be used with canon There are advertisements for 2017 and some strange moments in the first video. Doctor Who Christmas special, so it clearly isn’t set within the show.

However, the second is clearly canon. She is greeted by the Thirteenth Doctor on several occasions. She leaves the TARDIS at one time and then comes back later to rekindle that fire. We don’t know where this is, or what she’s doing, but considering the Doctor’s whole schtick is being able to travel through time and space, this could work just about anywhere and any-when.

A selection of Yule Logs that I find ironic on the official FX channel can be found at FX Channel. They are they really festive? No. They are absolutely funny. Yes. These are worthy characters to be included, though they should not be interrogated about their cheer or canonical worth. Each is about half an hour in length and seamlessly fits into the preexisting scenes.

Log The Girl From the Seay Yule

It is how long? It takes only 10 minutes.

What are your Christmas cheer levels? Unless you’re from Florida or somewhere else warm doesn’t necessarily spell holiday cheer.

It can be used with canon The scene in the video looks like it fits right in with Molly Knox Osterag’s graphic novel. Although it might not seem Christmasy, the video is sweet enough to be included.

Hades Yule Log

It is how long? It can last for 12 hours. This can be kept going all day long until Christmas Day.

What are your Christmas cheer levels?It’s not surprising, given that Hades is not just a place where modern ornamental touchstones for Christmas are popular, but it also takes place long before Christianity became a reality. Still, there are pomegranate wreaths and a big ol’ satyr bag, so it’s festive in a very Underworld way!

It can be used with the Canon Yup! You can almost imagine Cerberus taking a warm, cozy nap by the fireside with all the necessary touchstones.

Log Hearthstone Muloc Yule Log

It is how long? Hair over 53 minutes is a good background for presenting.

What are your Christmas cheer levels?Although it seems at first that the fireplace is not decorated much, as time goes by, more Murlocs start to appear on-screen. By the end of the video, it’s a fully festively decorated scene. Christmas music plays in the background occasionally — but sung by Murlocs.

It can be used with the Canon This takes place inside the Tavern. HearthstoneThis is what presumably happens. It is possible to hear people playing the game. The décor is themed to the world, as is the aforementioned Murloc-sung music. Overall, it’s a charming addition to the Hearthstone canon.

Marvel Comics Fireplaces

Only a handful are Marvel comics fireplaces. But some of them do. It is not have Christmas cheer (seriously, Tony Stark’s lonely, cheerless apartment is just kinda dismal).

What are your Christmas cheer levels? Cap’s apartment is pretty bare, but some jazzy Christmas standards play in the background to set the tone. It isn’t as Warm as crowd chatter, but it’s still something.

It can be used with the Canon It is even more so than the Marvel Cinematic Universe Yule Logs. Close-ups reveal a frame of Peggy’s former lover, which is extremely heartwarming. However, it does make you sad that this entire fireside series seems to take place in comics-verse. Even if it didn’t, this video’s from 2016 so it’s pre-Avengers: Endgame Steggy and her husband.

Do you feel Christmas joy? Not much, but that’s fine, because Kamala Khan doesn’t celebrate Christmas. It’s a warm fireplace in the cold New Jersey winter, and a good time to enjoy some non-denominational warmth. The holiday cheer is brought on by the noises of people having fun.

It can be used with the Canon There’s nothing to suggest this is canon, but also nothing to suggest it isn’t. A cute little touch on this one is Kamala’s costume draped over her couch — better hide that before someone sees!

It is how long? This Yule Log video is two hours long. Not long enough to keep you entertained all day, but not too short that you’ll have to click “restart” too many times.

What are your Christmas cheer levels? There is so much to do! It is Christmas outside and the hearth has been decorated. There are many presents. So cozy, so quaint. It’s a perfect Christmas experience. There are some great Christmas surprises that appear on the screen from time to time.

It can be used with the Canon MinecraftCanon can be defined as what you do with it. Maybe there isn’t an actual Santa NPC, but there canIf you really believe in Santa, then you should be. A burglar may break in to the home and steal a gift. Ain’t that the Minecraft way?

Outlander | Yule Log (2014)

It is how long? The 2019 Christmas version and the 2014 Christmas version take approximately an hour. For the kitchen, it takes about 90 minutes.

What are your Christmas cheer levels? More subtle décor in these, befitting of the period piece. The show’s two main characters are made up of animals. Two of them play the main theme song, which does actually sound pretty Christmas-y, in the sad sort of way that “O Holy Night” does. The music then changes to more festive Celtic-sounding music.

With a minimal decor and a fireplace, the kitchen is an exception.

It can be used with canon It is nice to include the cat in these fireplace videos. Adso the wee kitten, introduced in Season 2 of The Animated Series is featured in this video. Outlander. The one from five years ago has two dogs, who don’t really have any canonical ties, but they sure are cute! Overall, they stylistically fit into the show, and that’s good enough.

Seinfeld Yule Log

It is how long? Just over an hour.

What are your Christmas cheer levels? This video is notably lacking in Christmas cheer, but that’s OK, because it is full of Festivus cheer!

It can be used with canon It’s not clear who the apartment belongs to or which Seinfeld family members would own such a beautiful fireplace. It is only the small, Seinfeld-labelled basket that holds it back.

Shrek Yule log

It is how long? A little under 30 minutes, so you may need to press replay a couple o’ times.

What are your Christmas cheer levels? Garlands decorate the hearth. A few jangly tunes can be heard in the background. There are chattering guests and children. What’s really missing, though, is the sound of the fire, which is lost beneath the Shrek characters occasionally wandering on screen.

The “Snoggletog Log” is just a window into fantasy Christmas in the How to Train Your DragonEverything is perfect, right down to the Christmas decorations and cheerful Christmas music. The background music, characters and background noises can make it difficult to hear the real fire sounds.

It can be used with the Canon Yup! Similar to the Shrek companion, Yup! Donkey’s Christmas Shrektacular,The Snoggletog Log can be used as a companion. How to Train your Dragon at Home, which was premiered earlier this year on NBC. This short film is set after the events in the final How to Train Your DragonThe film explores the consequences of the trilogy. Hiccup and Astrid both have children. Toothless as well as the Light Fury also have children. All three appear in this film. It will fit snugly into canon.

Sonic 2 Yule Log

What is your Christmas spirit level? Although it looks quite ordinary at first, Sonic soon starts to get more festive decorations. The whole place is now incredibly festive. There’s a tree, stockings, gifts, a wishlist for Santa, and more.

It can be used with the CanonSonic and the other main characters each have their stockings.

Venom Yule Logs

There are two versions currently: one that is animated but cute and the other one that looks more real. Venom: There Must Be Carnage.

It is how long? While the 10 hour-long first video is a bit long, this loop seems only to consist of 10 seconds of Venom animating and then drinking hot cocoa. Disclaimer: We did not see all the 10 hours. He might do something interesting and complex seven hours later.

Second is 10 hours in length, and the lights flash at different times.
