Sony Granted Patent For Official PS5 Faceplates
Last year’s PlayStation 5 design was controversial. PlayStation 5 fans loved the sleek, futuristic design. Some consumers, however, were less impressed by the white faceplates. After the launch of the next-generation console, third-party vendors began making different color faceplates. The most in-demand option was black. These competitors were stopped by Sony for most of the time. The entertainment conglomerate now has its patent for PS5 faceplates.
According to GameSpot, the patent is listed as a “Cover for Electronic Device” and comes paired with a few mock-up sketches of the PlayStation 5. The text within the patent claim mentions a “Skin cover for PS5 console” and “the ornamental design for a cover for an electronic device.”
Of course, this doesn’t immediately equate to a future where Sony-labeled faceplates might be sold at your local electronic establishments. This is a possibility, but we don’t know if it will. But it’s nice to imagine a new look for the PlayStation 5. Only time will tell what this patent means for the console’s aesthetic.
Are you assuming that this is just Sony monopolizing the market, without actually intending to release faceplates themselves? Are we likely to actually see the patent used? Leave your thoughts in the comments!
