Disney Plus is finally making a live-action Gargoyles series, maybe?
Greg Weisman is the creator of 1990s animated show. Gargoyles, and a few things are sure to come up: Yes, he’s interested in continuing GargoylesThe story was abruptly cut midway through, but the cult-like following continues to exist. And yes, he’s open to a live-action version. Walt Disney Studios has toyed with this idea over the years, but it’s always been scuttled.
According to The Hollywood Reporter a new live-action series is being produced for Disney Plus. But take that with a grain of salt — there are a lot of challenges in any new version of Gargoyles, and it’s still very early in the series’ potential development.
According to THR’s report, the newGargoylesGary Dauberman (known for the Conjuring Horror-movie spinoffs) is developing and producing this movie. Annabelle, Created by Annabelle He wrote, and Annabelle Comes HomeHe wrote and directed this film, which was based on a story that he had developed with The ConjuringJames Wan, the director. Dauberman was signed to serve as showrunner, writer and executive producer for the new series. James Wan’s company Atomic Monster would executive produce the show.
The live-action series has not been announced yet. In the animated series’ original three-season run from 1994 to 1997, Gargoyles took its characters around the world and introduced a wide variety of settings and characters, so there’s plenty of fodder for a series that wouldn’t just be a straight live-action reboot.
This is the idea behind a child-friendly adventure. GargoylesIt feels odd to be in the hands someone who is known for making bloody and graphic horror films. Dauberman wrote the Conjuring spinoffs. But, whileGargoyles has the slightest tinge of gothic horror, it isn’t a horror series. This story is about creatures who are stone-like by day but come to life at night. It’s more urban fantasy. The pilot episode sees the warrior tribe of Goliath, including Goliath himself, under a magic spell which keeps them frozen in stone for an entire century. They go to sleep in medieval Scotland and wake up a thousand years later in Manhattan in 1994, now in the hands of a man so Machiavellian, there’s an entire trope about airtight schemes named after him.

The series’ reliance on inhuman creatures as the main characters makes a live-action adaptation an expensive prospect. Weisman was first interviewed by Polygon in 2020 when it became clear that the series would be adapted into a live-action film. GargoylesDisney Plus would allow the show to be viewed online and could potentially inspire a new wave of fans. He also said discussions had been held about creating a live-action Disney movie. Gargoyles reboot or spinoff were derailed when Disney bought Lucasfilm and Marvel: “Why take a chance on what they viewed as an obscure 1990 show with a cult following, when you can just do a Spider-Man cartoon, or a Star Wars cartoon?” he asked at the time. “Why take a risk on a huge-budgeted Gargoyles live-action feature that might bomb, when you could make another Marvel movie?”
Disney’s Marvel projects have been making less money than expected over the past several years, resulting in the company scaling back its plans for the MCU franchise’s future. Gargoyles, for example, could be a new project. At the same time, since half the cast of a series in the vein of the 1990s show would have to be CG, a Gargoyles show won’t be cheap. Dauberman’s vision for the franchise remains unknown. It will be interesting to see if the series succeeds and makes it onto the screen. Weisman’s involvement is not yet known.
Polygon reached out to Disney for comment and will update the story as soon as we receive a response.
