Harry Potter: Wizards Unite shutting down in 2022, Niantic says

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, developer Niantic’s augmented reality mobile game set in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World, is shutting down on Jan. 31, 2022. Niantic announced the game’s closure on the Harry Potter: Wizards Unite website, and promised players that they’ll get a narrative conclusion — Harry Potter and Hermione Granger will put an end to the in-game Calamity before Wizards Unite shuts down.

Niantic stated that it would remove Harry Potter: Wizards UniteOn Dec. 6, you can download the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. This date will also see the end of in-game purchases.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite launched in June 2020, and hoped to capture the magic of Niantic’s 2016 smash hit Pokémon GoUse of the Harry Potter License In the game’s story, Wizards UniteSomewhere after the events that took place in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Harry Potter and Ron Weasley join the Ministry of Magic after the Battle for Hogwarts. After a brief period of peace in wizarding communities, magic is seen in the muggle realm. The International Statute of Secrecy is at risk from Calamity, which was an ancient law keeping magic secret from witches and non-wizards. It dates back to the 1600s when witches and wizards were being persecuted.

But Wizards Unite seemingly didn’t find the same wide audience of PokémonGo, or Niantic’s previous AR game, AccessTo survive. In a blog post, the Niantic team said, “Not all games are meant to last forever. We aim to Harry Potter: Wizards UniteThe goal was to make the magic of wizarding real for millions of people as they explored their neighbourhoods. We accomplished that together, delivering a two-year narrative story arc that will soon complete.”

The developer said it will take “all of the learnings from Harry Potter: Wizards Unite into our other projects.”

Niantic has recently released another game in augmented reality. Pikmin Bloom, based on Nintendo’s Pikmin franchise. The company is also developing a project based on Hasbro’s Transformers property called Transformers: Heavy MetalAR giant robot battles will be featured in the new ‘Niantic’ game. Niantic claims it currently has nine apps and games in development. Some of these will be soft-launched in 2022.
