Stray Souls Interview: Legendary Silent Hill Composer Akira Yamaoka Joins the Team
The first project Jukai Studio took on was an untitled horror idea that they were very passionate about. It would become the film. Stray Souls.
Make sure to make Stray Souls, the team recalled their all-time favorite horror games and asked themselves, “Why do we love them? What makes these games so memorable?” Although a variety of favorites were discussed at length, it was the Silent Hill franchise that universally sat atop of everyone’s list.
It is important to note that the word “you” means “me”. Stray Souls The goal was to create an immersive experience that paid homage to the best of the genre. Akira Yamaoka’s work on The Last of Us was the perfect fit for the team. Silent HillThe series has become iconic. Together with veteran indie composer Pete Wicher, the team have created a soundtrack to be extremely proud of and one we’re sure players are going to love.
We sat with Akira to celebrate the all-star collaboration and we asked him about his creative process.

Your music has been widely praised for its ability to evoke emotions and set the tone for a game’s atmosphere. What is your process for creating music with emotional impact?
I think it’s important to communicate with lots of people, read lots of books, watch lots of movies, and use that all as a reference. Music can be considered a talent, which can then be learned. But to get the right emotions, you need to consider how music makes you feel.
Every person experiences different emotions. For you to be able to elicit such a variety of emotions you must think about it as you experience them by communicating with others, reading countless books and watching countless movies. You can’t just meet people and read books, though. It’s also important to consider things from your own perspective.
What are your best practices for working with the game developer and the rest of the team in order to enhance the overall gaming experience through music?
It is necessary to achieve a deeper understanding of the game’s direction and contents, and not just make music because it’s your job. Music shouldn’t be created as ordered. To understand a game, you need to know more about it. It is therefore important that you talk to the developers of the game.

It is well known that your work uses unconventional sounds and instruments. How do you incorporate unconventional elements in your music? And how does it improve the story-telling of games?
The essence of sound comes to mind. You use a piano to make a song that is a ballad, or a guitarist for rock songs, but the essence of the sound, I believe, cannot be something easily imagined. It is important to think of the emotion that your listener might feel as you create a particular sound.
You can use the metallic clangs of construction sites or water running down rivers as examples. Use the emotion you feel when you hear a sound to inspire your music. You will be able to evoke emotions in the listener.
You have been involved with sound design in video games, as well as composing music. What are your thoughts on how music and sound can be combined to create an immersive audio experience?
The key to creating a game is entertainment. I don’t think this differs much from the process of composing music. You must first think about what will make the game funnier and more engaging. Then, music is less of a priority. In other words, you must create a certain “something” the human ear can pick up from the game.
If you’re a musician, you can just make music, but as a game composer, your job is to think about what makes the game more fun and more interesting as you create sounds and music. The game sound designer should be responsible for all the sounds that come from your television or monitor, including music, SFX and voice.

Why do you create unique soundscapes and atmospheres for horror video games?
I think it’s a certain incongruity. People won’t feel uneasy in a stable environment. You can’t evoke fear with a beautiful chord progression and the imaginings it gives the listener. It also can’t be too incongruous. I think you need just the smallest hint of incongruity to make the listener think “something’s wrong” or “something seems strange.”
You have a distinctive and recognisable style. What are the ways you can maintain your artistic style while adapting it to meet the requirements and constraints for different video game projects.
This is an excellent question. I think maybe it’s because I don’t imitate. Of course, at first you’d imitate someone and try to create an atmosphere like that, but it’s very important to go on to create your own thing. You may find that your work is not accepted. Therefore, you must have a philosophy. Ask yourself, when you compose music, why it is that you like to create.
Even if you create something completely original, if your unique philosophy isn’t injected into it, it will be but dust in the wind. That’s why I think it’s so important to continue to ask myself “why am I creating this music?” over and over again. Consider it.

What is your secret to success? And what tips do you give to aspiring music composers looking to break into the video game industry?
It is important to not depend on oneself too much, and meet new people. I also think it’s essential to be exposed and aware of new art. It is important to be involved with Silent HillIt had a big impact on my life. The meeting with the Silent HillMy success was also a team effort.
Create your own sound-design philosophy. Grab the opportunity to do many small tasks.
You are being given.
You’ve worked on a variety of projects, including films and albums. What are the challenges and benefits of working with different artistic mediums and how do you adapt your process?
Sound isn’t the most important aspect of any of them. The artistic merit of games, films, TV and anime is the main factor. It is not music that matters most.
What can I do to make it better as a sound director? What can I do to increase the artistic value of this work? All content is created with this in mind. It’s all.
